  • Friendly and peaceful family site a 15-minute drive from Cognac
  • Sample cognac and champagne and the owners' homemade aperitif
  • Playground, spotless amenities and pool with sun loungers alongside
'Fantastic', 'lovely' and 'very friendly' are just a teeny selection of accolades heaped on the spectacular little site of Camping du Pas des Biches – and there's Pineau des Charentes wine and cognac fine champagne to sample here too. The owners here make their own Pineau ('delicious' and 'amazing' are the verdicts on this, and oui, you can buy bottles too to take gleefully home): sample it on a splendid and peaceful countryside setting surrounded by Cognac vineyards, with loads of green space and tall trees all around for shade. It's all on the edge of the handsome little village of Celles in the Charente-Maritime department, within easy reach of family days out at local villages and at Cognac and Pons 15 minutes' drive away – although perhaps don't let the kids sample the wares at the former… Facilities are excellent here for days on site: there's an outdoor pool for family dips, sun loungers alongside for idle basking, and a well-equipped playground to entertain the kids. Amenities including showers and toilets are kept spotless. Please note that there's little English spoken at the site – however, you'll still find this place mighty friendly even if you don't parlez any français.

Liked: Super friendly and welcoming owner/manager. Very enthusiastic about his special home made ‘ aperitif’ which he urges you to try! Small, very quiet site in a beautiful rural landscape. Very much a ‘back to nature’ basic feel with minimal ‘holiday camp’ frills. Excellent plentiful supply of really hot water in the showers - best of any site yet! Sounds of nature dominate including a very lively owl! This site is not for those looking for a big commercial enterprise with lots of facilities and entertainment. The toilets and showers are clean but basic. Pitching is somewhat random - we arrived when the reception was closed and made our own way 100m further up the country lane to the actual site. There are only a few touring pitches among some trees so we just parked in what looked like it may be a pitch and plugged in to await events. The site owner arrived shortly afterwards in his van, shook hands and said we were fine where we were if it suited us - he doesn’t speak English! He asked us to pop back to reception later that afternoon to check in and pay. Very relaxed but also no nearby amenities (shops, bars, restaurants). We have our own internet router and the signal was excellent.

Disliked: No real dislikes if you are happy with the simple life.

From the manager: Patrick thanks you very much for your message. You have described our campsite perfectly, in fact we really want to keep this traditional and natural camping spirit, we are clearly in opposition to the large "holiday village" campsites!! We are very happy that you liked it! See you maybe another time! Goodbye Patrick and Claire

Liked: Small family run campsite which included more permanent residents. Friendly, facilities clean. Pitch a little bit squeezed in but ok. Exceptional shower with water flow across cubicle rather than facing door and consequently wetting all of the floor. Swimming pool and bar area but season coming to an end so not really available. Very friendly helpful owners. Offered and partook of Cognac tasting from owner, charming.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback, indeed the end of the season is approaching, it's a little calmer!! We're glad you liked it! Maybe see you next time

Liked: We had a lovely time staying just for a couple of days in transit and would return without question to explore the area much more in future. The site is in a rustic rural location, surrounded by vineyards and sweetcorn fields. This is a site where you need to be realistic about your needs and expectations - it is a relatively humble and simple campsite with everything you need - but it is not a big commercial park and you have to respect that. We loved the peace and quiet and simplicity. The experience feels like a really authentic "on the farm" kind of campsite stay. Small but good enough showers and washing up facilities. The biggest positive about the site are the wonderful hosts - Claire is lovely, speaks much better English than she realises, and is a great host. Patrick is an absolute legend and we had a wonderful couple of hours in his company in his Cognac sampling cave - we shall need to return after we have finished off our purchases!

Disliked: No toilet seats - but we know this is a common in France! Maybe clarity as to where fresh (potable) drinking water is available on site would be helpful.

From the manager: It's a perfect definition of our campsite, it's exactly what we want to keep from this place, something simple and authentic where people feel relaxed! Thank you so much ! And may be see you next time Patrick and Claire

Liked: Great vibe! Quiet. Invited to a party in the evening with a mussel cooking spectacle. Tried cognac for the first time - fab! Everyone was beyond friendly - even with my pigeon Derek Trotter French.

Disliked: Listen, rustic facilities. 2 toilets & showers - one in the traditional(!) style. Don’t let this put you off. Perfectly functional and clean.

From the manager: Thank you Elisabeth, passing through for just one night with us, you arrived on the right evening, we are happy that you were able to discover local products during this evening!! See you soon Claire

Liked: A lovely friendly site with a relaxed atmosphere. Claire speaks perfect English and can answer all your questions and also organises all your morning bakery needs! The site is by a working vignoble and you can buy home produced pineau and cognac. We're looking forward to our return.

Disliked: There were perhaps limited toilet facilities. However we visited in August and there seemed to be no problem.

Local attractions

The site is 12 kilometres from the city centre of Cognac and its museums, Château Royal de Cognac and peaceful promenades around the Jardin Public and La Maison de la Lieutenance. Supermarkets, shopping areas, a golf course, parks, bars and restaurants are all on hand in town too. Heading west from the site, it's also about 15 minutes' drive to the medieval town of Pons, a stopoff point on the famed St James's Way. The town's a splendid spot for sightseeing among medieval streets and aged buildings: start off at the central square and climb to the top of the donjon for a stroll around the gardens and viewsome scenes of the town and its Grand Escalier staircase. For a restful and grownup time, the hot springs and casinos of Jonzac are within 25 minutes' drive. Camping du Pas des Biches is also well placed for seaside days at Meschers-sur-Gironde, Saint-Georges-de-Didonne and Royan, all within an hour.
