  • Fairytale-inspired glamping site on a rural estate near Treize-Vents
  • A 10-minute drive from Puy du Fou theme park; an hour from the coast
  • Breakfast, dinner and picnic baskets available to order on site
Once upon a time, there was a very splendid place in the Vendée countryside, where happy folk lived in a little village of cosy wooden lodges scattered around the gorgeous grounds of a smart estate… In fact, such a thing isn’t a figment of anyone’s imagination – it’s the real-life set-up at Domaine de la Boulaie, a spacious glamping site spread over 29 hectares of woodland, meadows and ponds roughly halfway between the villages of Treize-Vents and Mallièvre (and around a kilometre from both). The people that run the place have something of a penchant for classic fairytales, so all the lodges are named after a different tale or character, with subtle hints of a theme running throughout (think pointy roofs, pretty drapes and cute character cushions rather than full-on princess glitter…) Each one is also kitted out with an ensuite bathroom and comfy beds that should lead to splendid slumbers for Sleeping Beauties. There’s plenty of practical stuff alongside the fancy stuff – breakfast and seasonal evening meals can be ordered at the restaurant (please book ahead) and the site team can also sort picnic baskets for those heading out (or heading for a choice picnic spot by the pond). The location’s pretty magic, too – châteaux, adventure parks and museums are all easily accessible from this site, and you can have days out in Nantes, in the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park or over by the Vendée coast with a drive of an hour or so. However, the big draw nearby has to be the excellent Puy du Fou – France’s second most visited theme park is just 10 minutes’ drive from the site.

Local attractions

Scenes on site got the nippers (or your good self…) dreaming of being princely/princessly in a proper castle? Try it out with a trip to Château d’Ardelay (20 minutes’ drive) or Château de Tiffauges (half an hour), or nip over to Nantes (an hour) to tie in a castle tour with visits to the cathedral, the botanic garden and the Jules Verne Museum. There’s all sorts of imagination-fuelling stuff going on over at Puy du Fou theme park (10 minutes’ drive) too – the place is packed with rides, spectacular shows and other goings-on all inspired by various eras of history. Time to bring things backs to the here and now? Cholet (25 minutes) has go-karting, ice skating, a swimming pool and an indoor play centre, and there’s a treetop adventure park at Tépacap Vendée (half an hour). If it’s something more chilled-out you seek, try the pretty gardens at Parc Oriental de Maulévrier (20 minutes) or the Terrier Marteau windmills (20 minutes), or venture to the Vendée coast, an hour away.
