  • Family-friendly site half an hour’s walk from a beach and surf school
  • A 10-minute drive from the centre of Les Sables-d'Olonne
  • Large water park, playground and kids’ entertainment on site
Family, sea, surfing… if those are things that rank high in your holiday must-haves, whisk the family (or your other half) away to Domaine de l’Orée. Family-friendly to the max, it is within half an hour’s walk of Sauveterre beach and a friendly surf school. This Vendée spot is only a 10-minute drive away from the centre of Les Sables-d'Olonne, a seaside town with a lively promenade and sandy beach, renowned for hosting the Vendée Globe yacht race every four years. When you’re not busy balancing on a surfboard or strolling the town’s promenade, get stuck into the family-friendly facilities scattered around Domaine de l’Orée. Firstly, it has a 3,800-square-metre water park with an indoor and outdoor pool, waterslides, a heated lagoon, paddling pools and a 90-metre lazy river with inflatables. Second, there’s an epic list of activities for kids and adults. The mini club (for four- to 12-year-olds) runs games and other activities, and there’s also a playground on site if they want to let off more steam. For teens and adults, there are fitness sessions and sports activities, and if you’d rather prop up your feet, do so on the bar terrace. Those bringing their trusty bicycles can access cycle paths directly from the site, including trails towards Les Sables-d'Olonne and its pedestrian area, L'île Penotte, which has plenty of museums, as well as souvenir shops and local art pieces. Don’t forget to stroll through the alleys in La Chaume, where there are traditional fishermen’s houses.

Local attractions

Eying up Les Sables-d'Olonne (10 minutes’ drive) for your first outing? There’s plenty to keep you occupied for a whole day, between the promenade, museums, fishermen's houses, historic sites and casinos. One of the casinos, Casino JOA des Sables d'Olonne (20 minutes), looks like it should be in Louisiana rather than France, and it also has a miniature golf course and evening musical performances. If your kids are keen animal spotters, they should have plenty to point at when wandering around Zoo des Sables d'Olonnes (20 minutes), whether it’s penguins, lions or anteaters. For other easy activities, there is a seawater pool on the Remblai promenade with a spa (including a hammam and hot tub), several weekly markets (including a covered market in the city centre) selling regional treats and plenty of lovely terraces to watch the boats come and go. The town centre is packed with historic sites such as the 19th-century villas along the promenade and buildings like Église Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Port des Sables-d'Olonne. Elsewhere, head for outdoor activities in Foret d'Olonne (half an hour’s walk) or theme park rides at Puy du Fou (an hour and five minutes).
