  • Expansive site five minutes’ drive from Puy du Fou park, in the Vendée
  • Parc Oriental de Maulévrier half an hour’s drive; Nantes one hour
  • Dog-friendly accommodation; plenty of country hiking trails
Roll up, roll up for exciting/relaxing (delete according to your day’s itinerary) days at Le Hameau des Épesses, a large, family-friendly site on the outskirts of the village of Les Épesses, in the Vendée countryside of western France. A massive advantage of staying here is the proximity to Puy du Fou (a five-minute drive or a half-hour walk), a popular amusement park with immersive shows about French history (think Roman gladiatorial games and swashbuckling musketeers). And when you’re done marvelling at the monumental productions, the park also has an adventure playground and several nature areas, including a rose garden and the Vallée Fleurie, with its woodland trails, shaded ponds and waterfalls. But staying here is not just about the Puy du Fou park. You can spend several hours exploring the hiking trails lacing the green landscape around Le Hameau, or strolling along the leafy banks of the Sèvre Nantaise river (10 minutes’ drive). By the way, dogs are welcome at the site, so you can have your canine buddy by your side during these walks. There are restaurants and shops (including bakeries selling buttery breakfast croissants) in Les Épesses, or you can drive to Les Herbiers (10 minutes), where a large commercial area has several supermarkets, plus a cinema and a bowling alley for rainy days.

Local attractions

There are plenty of castles and fortresses in this corner of France – some of them in ruins, many of them still perfectly preserved. You can visit the 14th-century Château de Saint Mesmin (20 minutes’ drive), or check out the medieval remains of Château Tiffauges (25 minutes), which is now the site of lively period re-enactments. Are you into plants and quiet contemplation? Then head to the Parc Oriental de Maulévrier (half an hour’s drive), one of the largest Japanese gardens in Europe, where you’ll find endless inspiration for your own garden back home, alongside peaceful surrounds. From about mid-March, the park bursts into colour for cherry-blossom season. There’s another Japanese garden, the Ile de Versailles, in Nantes (one hour). The city is also worth a visit for its Machines de l'Île, a steampunk-style park with remarkable mechanical creatures, including an elephant you can ride on, and a three-story carousel with rides inspired by the books of Jules Verne.
