This part of France’s Atlantic coastline is nicknamed ‘Little California’ – and Camping Bel is in a great spot to sample all the sun, sea and good times the seaside resort of La Tranche-sur-Mer is famed for. There’s usually as much sunshine here a year as they have down south on the French Riviera and there’s more than a hint of the Mediterranean about the whole place.
The south-facing 13km-stretch of glorious sandy beach is the main attraction for many, with surfing, sailing, windsurfing and kiteboarding all waiting to tempt you into the waves. In high season you can also head to the pier (10 minutes’ walk) to hop aboard an excursion to the Île de Ré, Île d’Aix and Fort Boyard.
Like the rest of the Vendée region, La Tranche-sur-Mer has a real reputation for keeping the whole family entertained. Within 500 metres of your pitch there’s a skatepark, swimming centre, watersports hire, cycle paths, a football stadium and tennis courts. Meanwhile, the pedestrian streets, markets, shops and restaurants of the town centre are all within 10 minutes’ walk.
On site there’s plenty of greenery and hedges between pitches to give a bit of shade and privacy. The large pool complex includes a paddling pool and jacuzzi and there’s also a fitness centre and spaces for playing pétanque, football and badminton. Keep the kids happy with an outdoor Scandi-style play area, indoor soft-play and shows from Monsieur Camembert the clown. You can stock up on snacks and drinks at the bar, bakery and takeaway, and there's a large supermarket five minutes’ walk away for further stocking up.

Local attractions
Filling your holiday with day trips is never going to be a problem in the Vendée. Along the coast, visit the pine forest-backed beaches at Plage de la Terrière and Plage des Conches (10 minutes’ drive) and the historic port of Jard-sur-Mer (20 minutes).
For those looking to dial up the adventure, race around the track at the Vendée Kart Circuit (10 minutes), ride the flumes at O’Gliss waterpark (15 minutes) and challenge the family up in the trees, on the water or around the mini golf course at O’Fun leisure park (20 minutes).
A taste of the area’s rich history isn’t far away either. Le Château des Aventuriers (25 minutes) is a mash-up of a traditional castle tour with dinosaurs, pirates and fantasy fun at every turn. Or there’s Château de Talmont (30 minutes) if you prefer a more traditional medieval castle jaunt with the occasional possibility of jousting.
