It's free, quick and easy!
- Rural Vendée campsite half an hour's drive from Puy du Fou
- A 45-minute drive to Nantes; 10 minutes from Montaigu
- Heated indoor pool, kids’ club and terrace bar near Chausselière lake
Planning a family day out at Puy du Fou? You’ll be happy knowing you can retreat to Camping du Lac de la Chausselière to put your feet up at the end of a fun-filled day. This rural site is an easy half-hour drive away from the popular theme park, with spacious shaded pitches and a peaceful, slow-paced vibe.
That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do – in fact, something’s always happening on site, including kids’ clubs for youngsters, and a games room geared for teens. You can go boating and fishing on Chausselière lake, or cuddle llamas and goats at the mini-farm, but during the day, life mostly drifts around the swimming pools (indoor and out) and sun-trap decking. Also around the place are play areas and paddling pools, table football at the terrace bar and a TV room for family viewing. There’s a decent wifi connection too, to keep everyone in touch.
With snacks like steak-frites served up at the bar, and a handy food shop also on site, there’s no need to worry about cooking (although barbecues are available for a small charge if you do want to get grilling). You might also like to taste the Vendée region’s seafood, pulled fresh from the Atlantic and served at riverside restaurants in medieval Montaigu, 10 minutes’ drive away.
As well as the siren call of Puy du Fou, there are bird parks, a sprinkling of grand châteaux and the buzzing city of Nantes to discover. And if you want a day off driving, jump on the nearby Vélorail, a sort of cycle for five people that follows a former railway line.

Local attractions
It’s absolutely worth spending a whole day at Puy du Fou (30 minutes’ drive), where history comes alive in colourful pageants and immersive shows packed with action. Every day rounds off with the Cinéscénie spectacular, involving a cast of thousands and winding up with an awesome fireworks display.
It’s not often you see a gigantic mechanical elephant lumbering along the quayside. But you might do in Nantes (45 minutes) – and you can have a ride on his back too (check schedules before setting out though, because Le Grand Éléphant is not always operational). If he’s not making an appearance, take the kids to poke around medieval war machines at Château de Tiffauges (15 minutes).
You can mix up kids’ fun with a bit of culture too; learn about regional history at Historial de la Vendée (30 minutes), a cracking contemporary museum, or book tickets for classical music festivals at the Logis de la Chabotterie (20 minutes), which also has gorgeous gardens to explore.
