Peaceful setting in the Marais Poitevin

Prepare your paddling arm: Camping l'Île Cariot is in the Marais Poitevin, the second biggest wetland in western France: here you can/certainly should take a canoe out, or a kayak, or perhaps just relinquish the paddle and allow yourself to drift dreamily down its waters on a guided flat-bottomed boat… Camping l'Île Cariot is a friendly and easy-going site, in a peaceful place about 20 kilometres from the beaches and watersports of the Atlantic coast, and 40 minutes' drive from the smashing port city of La Rochelle. Countryside and coast activities like fishing, hiking, riverside cycling and birdwatching are all around in the surrounding area. Among the many facilities on site are a heated pool with a shallow pool for kids (open from June to September), a food shop, a playground, a pétanque court, a TV room and a restaurant. Fishing is also available on site. The site also has shower and toilet blocks, disabled facilities and a launderette.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 15/06 and 15/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Liked: A nice clean, quiet site, that's good facilities and well maintained. The pool was closed during my visit mid-June. Probably not much demand typically, but 20 degrees is tropical in Scotland.

Disliked: Booking through Pitchup gives a location that Google maps misinterpreted. Make sure you're in Chaillé-les-Marais not Champagné-les-Marais. This isn't a campsite issue, however.

Liked: Amazing helpful receptionist, really thoughtful and kind. Lovely clean and great facilities. The whole camp is well kept and to a very standard. Brilliant stay ❤️ Definitely would go back ❤️

Liked: Our first time visiting. We will be back if we decide to visit the area again. It had the feel of a family campsite; quiet and peaceful. Beautiful secluded level pitches. Clean toilets and shower block. All the facilities a family could need (toilets, showers, washing up area, clothes washing, games area). Games to borrow such as board games as well as outside games like petanque and tennis). Really friendly and welcoming staff. Always felt welcome. Activities provided by the site too.

Local attractions

Whether your tastes are ticked by a peaceful stroll along country lanes, a whirl around lively La Rochelle, gently stalking local wildlife or basking on the beaches of the southern Vendée, Camping l'Île Cariot is well placed for weeks' worth of active and chilled out days. The famed old abbey buildings of Maillezais, Nieul sur l’Autise and Saint Michel en l’Herm are also within easy reach. Boats of all sorts should be investigated around here too, first up with a canal trip along the rivers of the Marais Poitevin, then with a lazy afternoon being rowed around the Venise Verte, the marshland crisscrossed with teeny canals. Or take the binoculars to the wetlands of La Baie de l’Aiguillon Natural Park, home and migratory stopoff to thousands of wading birds and waterfowl. Just along the coast, have city days out at Fontenay le Comte and La Rochelle.

All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.

A valid vaccination certificate must accompany your dog.

Barbecues are permitted but must be raised off the ground and attended by an adult at all times.
