Camping La Fortinerie: Sunny and shaded pitches

General

  • Peaceful site between Vernantes and Mouliherne in the Forêt de Monnaie
  • Less than half an hour from Saumur and the Loire river
  • Communal barbecue area, well-equipped kitchen and smart bathrooms

Four acres of family-friendly space flanked by fields and forest – how fab. Quiet rural site Camping La Fortinerie is a family-run place on the edge of the Forêt de Monnaie, with heaps of space but only a handful of guests on site at any one time to preserve the peace.

And how even more fab – Saumur is less than half an hour away by car for when you fancy breaking away from the woodsy surrounds for days meandering around the medieval château, taking in a show at Le Cadre Noir, paddling along the Loire or sampling the town’s array of sparkling wines.

You’ll not need to stray all that way for food though, for there are supermarkets, butchers, bakers and the like in the nearby villages of Vernantes and Mouliherne, and plenty of local markets to poke about in. Supplies sorted, you’re keenly encouraged to spend a chilled out evening on site cooking on the communal barbecue and sipping something from one of the area’s wineries.

Should you wish to retreat indoors to prep your meals, it’s a short stroll to the well-equipped kitchen (with microwave, oven, fridge-freezer, crockery, pans and the like); it’s also here that you’ll be able to freshen up your togs with the laundry facilities. As for freshening up yourself, that’s easily sorted in the smart shared bathrooms, which are kitted out with rain showers, mirrors and power sockets for your beautifying gadgets.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

Beautiful quiet spot far from the madding crowd.
The site which has only 5 pitches is run by a very friendly couple whose aim to please and attention to detail are outstanding.

Fabulous toilets, shower rooms and campers' kitchen provide the highest level of comfort we have experienced on any campsite.

Easy cycling from the door with a multitude of possibilities of linking to formal routes such as the Loire Valley EV6.

We liked it so much, we extended our stay by a week!

This campsite is one of the most friendly, beautiful and welcoming places we have ever stayed. We were make to feel so welcome by Julian, the owner - he even leant us a paddling pool for our baby daughter to play in. There’s a kitchen garden, fully serviced kitchen with home grown & homemade produce and beautifully designed shower rooms. We made wonderful friends with fellow campers, chilling out in the hammocks and outdoor lounge spaces. At night, the stars are just spectacular - amongst the wood and in utter tranquility.

This is the best campsite we've ever stayed in and it has probably ruined camping anywhere else! Tina and Julian are the best hosts and made us feel welcome immediately, even extending our stay as we didn't want to leave. The kitchen and its equipment is brilliant, and the washing machine is even free to use! The bathrooms are better than a lot of hotels we have stayed in, and the pitches are shaded and large. It is a rural and quiet campsite in woodland where you can see the milky way at night! Other touches such as a daybed and hammocks, as well as a cooling off mister are perfect touches which all add to a very lovely experience.

Nothing was too much trouble for Tina and Julian. They were excellent hosts and the site is superb. The toilets/showers/facilities are some of the best we’ve encountered on a campsite and the wider grounds are filled with relaxing shady spots - including some very comfy hammocks. We both hope to return some day soon!

Local attractions

It’s well worth making the half-hour car journey to Saumur for a day trip, wandering round its château and taking your place in the audience for the military horse shows at the famed Le Cadre Noir. If you’ve a little more time, the town’s also home to a tank museum, a mushroom museum and several places that you can hire canoes for a Loire-based paddle.

Time for a glass of vino? Saumur’s the place for those who favour bubbles; there are plenty of fab places to take a winery tour and pick up a bottle or two around Angers (45 minutes’ drive away) as well.

For an insight into how different folks lived their lives, pay a visit to the troglodyte village 40 minutes away at Rochemenier or wander round the rather fancier digs at Château de Montgeoffroy or Château de Gizeux. Should the tiddlers tire of history, there’s an excellent zoo in Doué-la-Fontaine.
