It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-style Nord-Pas-de-Calais site in a peaceful canalside setting
- Five minutes' walk from Bergues town centre; Dunkirk 15 minutes' drive
- Two minutes' walk from footpaths and fishing opportunities; free wifi
Plot your route to this family-friendly Nord-Pas-de-Calais site if you like the sound of fresh-air breaks close to Bergues, Belgium and the coast.
If you haven't heard of this well-preserved town before, picture this: an impressive Flemish-style belfry that wouldn't look out of place in Bruges, sprawling medieval ramparts and a weekly market where you can sample specialities including local cheese and sausages.
Like the idea of being within a short walk of all that? Camping Vauban is on an island just to the north of the town centre and is surrounded by canals, making this quiet site a top destination for fishing fans, history hunters and just about anyone who likes the peace and quiet of being by the water.
The facilities here include free wireless internet, a laundry room and well-maintained toilets and showers. On the entertainment front, younger kids have a play area all to themselves, while teens can head to the games room and adults can hang out at the bar. Head to this latter spot for cocktails, soft drinks, beers and coffees, as well as themed evenings in the high season – a fantastic chance to get to know your neighbours or show your competitive side in a site-organised tournament.
Supermarkets, bakeries, banks and a railway station are all five to ten minutes' walk away in town. Dunkirk and its ferry terminal are 15 minutes' drive to the north.

Local attractions
After taking a spin around Bergues and its many sights, head north to Dunkirk (15 minutes' drive or a 10-minute train ride) to stroll over several kilometres of sand dunes, get up to watersports in the North Sea, explore wartime history and Operation Dynamo heritage at Dunkirk War Museum or experience the town's three-month carnival (mid-January to mid-April).
For another great city on the French side of the border, there's Lille, which is roughly an hour away by train or car (if you're arriving by road, consider parking outside the city centre and getting around by subway or bus). The city’s star-shaped citadel, top-rated zoo, modern-style Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille Cathedral and gorgeous Renaissance Vieille Bourse building are all must-sees to tick off. On top of that, shopping, a thriving food scene and lots of museums and art galleries give the place a cosmopolitan feel.
You could also take advantage of your proximity to Belgium to explore famed seaside towns like Ostend (50 minutes) or Knokke-Heist (an hour and 15 minutes) or inland highlights like historic Bruges (an hour) and Ghent (an hour and 15 minutes).
