  • Peaceful adults-only farm site 15 minutes' walk from Mauroux
  • Vineyards and wineries half an hour away by bike
  • Table d'hôte dinners five nights a week with home-grown produce
Contemplating going on hols sans enfants? Take a look at Domaine Les Gonies, a sustainable site on a farm 15 minutes’ stroll from the little Lot village of Mauroux. It’s a kid-free zone at this petite place, so it’ll just be your good selves among fellow peace-seeking grownups and the full-time farm residents, whose number includes cows, sheep, pigs and poultry. The folk here also maintain an orchard and an organic veg garden to pluck fresh bits and bobs from – sounds tasty? Try it all out at the table d’hôte gatherings that happen five nights a week, featuring four courses in which home-grown produce is the star attraction. Organic life isn’t just for the veg; hosts Ton and Mirella are making a real effort to keep their place in tune with nature, installing solar panels and solar collectors to save energy and an ecologically-sound outdoor swimming pool so you can cool off with a clear conscience. Carry on the eco-friendly activities by using your own muscle power to get out and about on nearby walking or bike routes: several routes have been mapped out for guests so you don’t have to worry about going astray as you roam. Potter around locally and before long you’ll likely stumble upon more eats in the form of markets or food festivals; there are often tastings to be had at the little clutch of wineries about half an hour away by bike.

Local attractions

A splendid way to spend a day is to bring bikes along and head towards the Lot river for hours bimbling about in the area’s many vineyards and wineries. If you need a little break from all the sipping, carry on to Puy l’Evêque (50 minutes by bike or 15 by car) to board a boat trip on a traditional wooden gabare, or paddle along on a canoe trip. Lots of those wineries are of course set in gorgeous surrounds, but for setups that are even more spectacular you’ll need a proper château or few: Château de Bonaguil, Château de Fumel and Château de Gavaudun are all within a 20-minute drive and all rather swoonworthy. Don’t let its inclusion as a ‘wicked place’ in Dante’s Inferno put you off a day trip to Cahors 45 minutes away: in real life it’s a most agreeable place to wander around, with a mix of medieval and 19th-century buildings to see, gorgeous gardens to stroll through and parts of the original fortified walls still in place. The UNESCO-listed 14th-century Pont Valentre is the star of the show (although the Cahors wine is rather decent too).
