- Family-friendly site with direct access to a beach on River Dordogne
- Within 30 minutes of the popular medieval hilltop village Rocamadour
- On-site activity company runs canoeing, canyoning and climbing trips
You won't have to lift a finger to arrange outdoor activities like paddleboarding, climbing, caving and canyoning from this splendid family site in the Lot: Camping du Port also runs a sister company specialising in such pursuits so that sorting them is a cinch.
And what a mighty amount there is to pick from. For a watery start, you can hire canoes on site to paddle along the Dordogne, using the nifty shuttle bus to one of several spectacular departure points (canoe directly back to the site from one). Or stay around the grounds for a spot of canny angling in the Dordorge river right in front of the site, where there are several good fishing spots. If the kids are baffled by the art, an introduction session to fishing runs for juniors once a week.
Camping du Port has been going strong since 1976, as a family-friendly site on the banks of the Dordogne, on the outskirts of the village of Creysse within easy reach of famed French destinations like Rocamadour and the Gouffre de Padirac. There's direct access to the river from here, via a small pebble beach into shallow water that's safe for kids to swim and paddle. And as for what's on offer for your leisurely pursuits in among all the fishing, canoeing and paddloboarding? Well now, the team has ensured there's quite a lot of that too.
A weekly programme of activities and entertainment such as barbecues, outdoor film screenings, fitness classes and kids' crafts and games runs in summer, and if you prefer to amble about at your own pace, there's a pétanque court to try out, an outdoor pool to splash at and sun loungers to laze on. There's a choice of two bars to pick from in summer as well, one of which is handily set next to the pool.
Camping du Port has riverside pitches, free wifi and disabled facilities. The on-site snack bar sells light bites such as salads, kebabs and paninis; there's a food shop, and barbecues are allowed.

Local attractions
This is first-rate territory for kids, with a good selection of family-friendly attractions within easy reach: Reptiland, the animal park with the largest collection of venomous reptiles in France, is within 15 minutes' drive, and the Rocher des Aigles bird of prey park, famed Monkey Forest and the splashtastic Quercyland waterpark are all within half an hour.
If you're off to Reptiland, stop off just outside for a ride on the Haut-Quercy tourist railway, a steam railway chuffing along six and a half kilometres from Martel to St. Martin de Martel from April to September. Stop off for a look at the 'town of seven towers' Martel after your railway ride: there's a covered market here every Wednesday and Saturday, a wool fair in July and a museum with exhibits from the local Gallic archaeological site of Uxellodunum.
Anyone anywhere in the Lot should also schedule in a day each at Rocamadour and the Gouffre de Padirac, two of the most visited destinations in France. For a more peaceful time, have a hike, hack or bike ride in the nearby Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, a vast space covering the countryside from the north of the Dordogne valley to the south of the Lot.
