  • Family-friendly site set in peaceful countryside near Aignan, Gers
  • A 10-minute drive to lake with beach and café; 45 minutes from Auch
  • Fishing, play area, honesty box shop, wifi and launderette
Need a bit of colour on your hols? This splendid corner of southern France is surrounded by sunflower fields and close to vineyards, with views over the far-off Pyrenees. Camping d'Artagnan, near Aignan in the Gers, makes a top base for Gascon getaways with gorgeous views. It may share its name with a main character from The Three Musketeers, but you don't need to get involved with too many swashbuckling adventures on a stay here: au contraire, this place is fully geared up for relaxing rural breaks. Fisherfolk can bring their rod and tackle and head out for fishing five minutes' drive away, while guests looking to give the driving a break can head out on two wheels and pedal around surrounding country lanes. This family-friendly site also has a safe play area to keep the nippers happy, and there's plenty of room in these spacious green surrounds for dogs, too. As the sun sets over the rolling hills, guests can set up a barbecue or firepit and get cooking over coals (for a taste of local terroir, drive 10 minutes into the village and head to the butcher). There's an honesty box shop on site for basics; for more elaborate supplies, there's a well-stocked supermarket in the village along with a handful of good restaurants.

Power optional grass site

Liked: Stunning, peaceful and tranquil campsite set by a pool with the hum of crickets and frogs to send you to sleep (earplugs available if you’re not keen on the hum!). We had an excellent breakfast in the morning watching the chickens, the dog and the cat chasing the rabbit (in a friendly way). The owners were lovely and we wished we could have stayed longer - there will be a next time!

Power optional grass site

Liked: Rob and Gemma are great hosts, no issues with the campsite at all. Evening meal was superb and eaten in a lovely setting. And to cap it all with an English pub on site, The Boarshead. Would definitely recommend this site

Disliked: Noisy frogs in the pond at night, but there are free ear plugs available!! A nice touch.

Local attractions

For days spent locally, pack your cossie and head to Lac d'Aignan (10 minutes' drive) for open-air swims (if picnicking here, save a spot for sweet treats from the beachside café). For more jaunts in the local area, check out the beasts of burden at the buffalo farm (10 minutes) or head to a nearby high-ropes course and swing through the trees (10 minutes). This is wine country, and those that like a tipple may be pleased to discover that various vino-themed outings are possible around here. The friendly folk who run this place recommend the vineyard at Saint Mont (half an hour): head here to sample tasty wines made with indigenous grape varieties and stick around to admire the beauteous former Benedictine abbey in the grounds. Still safe to drive? Head slightly further afield to Condom (45 minutes), a hub of Armagnac production, to learn about cognac's robust (and slightly boozier) cousin. For history buffs, Auch (45 minutes), a UNESCO-listed city on the St James's Way, is full of impressive medieval architecture.
