  • Stunning riverside site in the Grands Causses Natural Regional Park
  • Near the Gorges du Tarn and with a private riverside beach
  • Nature haven with pool, Jacuzzi, bar and restaurant
Just look at this splendid setting. Oui, it's right by the beaut rivers of the Tarn, where you can canoe, kayak, fish or swim – and it's surrounded by the spectacular green cliffs of the Gorges du Tarn: if it's stunning landscapes you're after, perhaps with a touch of Middle Earth or Westeros make-believe thrown in, this is very much the place to be. Camping Le Peyrelade is a few minutes' drive from the ruins of Château de Peyrelade, the castle at the entrance of the Gorges du Tarn (this is where Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones pretending will probably start to fire up), and just under half an hour from the huge – and hugely famed – viaduct of Millau, the tallest bridge on the planet. Roquefort (cheese, caves, but of course) is also within easy reach, as is gorge paragliding, limestone hiking, nature spotting in the surrounding Grands Causses Regional Natural Park, fishing, and chuffing around the gorges on a tourist train. Back at base, Le Peyrelade has its own private beach, again in jaw-dropping surroundings (do see pics), as well as loads to do for all ages: just possibly all this may have something to do with why previous guests have hailed this place as 'beautiful', 'excellent' and 'absolutely fab'. When you're not on the beach, canoeing serenely along the Tarn or determinedly investigating the surrounding gorges, there's a pool on site for your attention, as well as a Jacuzzi for gentle steaming sessions among the greenery. Kids have a paddling pool with water toys, a playground, a TV room if they really must retreat indoors, and a summer club for ages six to 10. Grownups aren't left out of the range of activities either, as July and August sees action for all including ping pong tournaments, aqua gym, hiking tours and live music. And after all that? Just potter around some of the nine hectares of this beaut place, then make your way to the site bar and restaurant for welcome thirst-quenching and much sampling of snacks and local cuisine.

Local attractions

It's a few minutes' drive, half an hour's walk or about 15 minutes by bike from here to the ruins of Château de Peyrelade, the 12th-century castle standing at the entrance to the Tarn gorges. The castle is open to the curious from mid-June to mid-September; if you thirst for more of the same (recommended), de Peyrelade is one of a group of 23 Aveyron castles on the Route des Seigneurs du Rouergue tourist path. A drive of 30 minutes will land you at viaduct of Millau, taller than the USA's Empire State Building at 343 metres high. As you might reckon, this is an excellent photography spot: take the bus from the Milau tourist office in town if you want a good pic guaranteed, or make for the viaduct's north and clamber the steps to the viewing point. You'll be around the Gorges du la Dourbie from here, so take your camera on the road out of town up to the limestone rock formation of Chaos de Montpellier-le-Vieux, above the gorges. If you want to venture further around this (also recommended), five trails lead around the outcrops and there's also a tourist train stopping off at the viewing points. A day out with a difference for your small creepy crawlies is at the 'insect city' of Micropolis, 25 minutes' drive west at Saint-Leons. There are interactive displays and exhibits on all sorts of insects here, from bees and beetles, to ants and centipedes, ladybirds, butterflies and dragonflies.
