Airstreams aplenty – with a couple dishing out dinners and drinks too. Get your vintage groove revved to the max with a right-on chillout time at the Ariège's Belrepayre Airstream Retro Trailer Park, in the Midi-Pyrénées with lush views towards the mountains. The accommodation here does exactly what it says on the tin: it's Airstream and it's retro, in fully modernised vans that still retain their vintage vibe. Around the site, venture back in time along the plentiful walking trails through forests and meadows to local points of interest including a ruined medieval village and the Vals troglodyte church. The medieval town of Mirepoix is seven kilometres away, and the Bram-Mirepoix-Lavelanet Voie Verte or greenway cycle route is close by if you think it would be fab to find your way around on two wheels. Although this is a retro-themed site, facilities and amenities are thoroughly modern. There's a hot tub so you can soak your dance-weary feet to refresh and rejuvenate, free wifi (prob best not to access in the hot tub), a pétanque court, table tennis, and a large field for frisbee and flying kites. Source your foodie supplies at the site shop instead, for barbecues and drinks among your mountain locale. Fresh bread and croissants are delivered every morning.

Local attractions

Belrepayre Airstream is within easy hiking, cycling or driving distance of some excellent local sights, including the Merovingian necropolis in Teilhet (six kilometres), dating back to 400-600 AD but only discovered by archaelogists in 2014. The area is open to the public if you want to go and have a nosy around. There's also the troglodyte church at Vals (25 minutes' drive away, 35 by bike and around an hour and a half by foot), carved out of the rock from the ninth century onwards. Even if you're not overly enthralled by old churches, this one's well worth a visit for the spectacular Pyrenees views you'll get if you climb up to the terrace on the building's third level. Within 15 minutes by car, 40 by bike or just under two hours on foot is the Parc aux Bambous botanical garden, specialising, as you might guess, in bamboo; 10 minutes' drive from here will take you to the La Ferme aux Bisons, home to creatures including llamas, donkeys, ponies and deer as well as the eponymous equines. Clambering back into the car, the medieval town of Mirepoix is about 20 minutes away; sailing, windsurfing and canoeing is at Lac de Montbel, within 50, and Sequoia Vertigo treetop adventure park is about an hour from the site, at Carla-Bayle.
