  • Luxury lodges in a wildlife haven, on the edge of woodland
  • Half an hour from Collonges-la-Rouge and 45 minutes from Rocamadour
  • Jacuzzi, terrace and woodburning stove for each lodge
It's like your own little – and highly lush – hamlet at Spalazen Nature near Palazinge in the Corrèze department: there are just a handful of lodges here making up their own teeny village on the edge of woodland. And what a hamlet it is too: the lodges here have been built with comfort firmly in mind, and each has its own terrace for breakfast, lunch, dins and drinks alfresco. Even more swishly, the terraces come with their own Jacuzzis, heated to a toasty 32°C by the accompanying woodburning stove. This is, of course, a wildlife haven, with loads of space around the site's two hectares and enclosing woodland to roam and nature spot. There's much more of the same at the regional nature parks of Millevaches and Limousin and Périgord Limousin to the east and west, in the surrounding Dordogne river valley, and in the countryside around department capital Tulle, set scenically on the Corrèze river 20 minutes' drive away. Spalazen Nature is well set up for families as well as loved-up breaks for couples: there's an excellent games room with toys, bean bags and a TV, and (essential to a screen-loving tween or teen) the site has free wifi too.

Local attractions

Spalazen Nature's scenic setting just over a kilometre from Palazinges is half an hour's drive from the spectacular red sandstone town of Collonges-la-Rouge, which dates back to the eighth century. Potter along the winding alleys to see stacks of swish buildings, 16th-century manor houses, the Castel du Maussa and the House of the Mermaid; the town centre is pedestrianised so is safe for sauntering. Just outside Collonges-la-Rouge is the path to the village of Saillac, two kilometres away, or you could wander the half-hour walk to Meyssac for more buildings of red stone and a busy Tuesday market. Also worth a visit is the lacemaking town of Tulle, with riverside cathedral and Museum of Traditional Arts. For hugely popular – and hugely impressive – French destinations, motor along to the Gouffre de Padirac, 40 minutes' away, and have a day at the cliffside village of Rocamadour, within 45.
