  • Lakeside camping on a private estate in Corrèze’s Dordogne Valley
  • A 20-minute drive to Tulle; half an hour from Aubazine
  • Bar and restaurant, plus fishing, wild swimming and sports facilities
The words leafy, waterside and peaceful spring to mind about Domaine de Taysse, a rural campsite edging the Étang de Taysse in Corrèze’s Dordogne Valley. It’s tucked away on a private estate with nearly 150 acres of beech and oak woodland, marshland and ponds to explore – and if you’re very lucky when you’re going about your daily business on site, you might get to see otters in the water. Family-friendly activities on site include swimming in the Étang de Taysse and paddling around its shoreline by kayak, pedalo or paddleboard. Away from the water, kids can play mini golf, pétanque, basketball or volleyball, and kick a ball around on the football field. And all necessary equipment can be hired from reception, so there’s no need to bring masses of sports gear with you. And anglers, listen up: fishing (catch and release only) for carp, pike, zander and perch on the well-stocked étang is free for site guests. Fishing regulations are available at reception, and there’s a dedicated fishing shed for all your kit. Equally well, you can turn your back and forego all that sporty activity to choose a more leisurely life on site. Laze on the small, sandy lakeside beach, hang out in the bar with a glass of local wine or retreat to the library to borrow a book or play a board game with the kids. However you decide to spend your holiday, you might like to round off each day with a delicious dinner of regional specialities (or pizzas on Wednesday) in the shade of the terrace restaurant.

Power optional forest floor site

Liked: A truly beautiful site with large grassed pitches among the trees. A very spacious site, so no feeling of encroaching on the many wooden chalets. Easy access to the lake with a small beach and boats for use. The restaurant is excellent - best we have known on a campsite. The reception was very friendly and helpful. We visited off season so the site was very quite, but I am sure it is spacious enough to be relaxing even when busy.

Disliked: The water taps around the site were not working. The toilet/shower block is adequate, may be less so when busy.

Local attractions

The Corrèze region has many historic towns and villages to explore by car; start your tour in the departmental capital of Tulle (20 minutes’ drive), with its medieval quarter and Romanesque-Gothic-style cathedral. Sitting on the Vézère River, Uzerche (40 minutes) bristles with 12th-century towers and spires, and the cobbled streets of pretty Aubazine (half an hour) grew up around its Cistercian abbey. If you’d rather spend your Corrèze holiday being active in the open air, have a go at waterskiing from Ski Club Nautique Marcillacois, or induce an adrenaline rush by zipwiring across the lake at Marcillac Sports Nature (both 15 minutes). To see the Dordogne River from a different perspective, hire kayaks from Monceaux-sur-Dordogne (35 minutes) to paddle downstream, and at Gimel-les-Cascades (10 minutes), families can follow the walk up way-marked tracks to the three spectacular waterfalls. Staying firmly on dry land, how about spending a day at Château de Sédières (15 minutes)? With its array of outdoor pursuits from mountain-biking trails for all the family to geocaching and kite-flying workshops, everybody will be happy and entertained.
