  • Wooded site by a river 15 minutes’ walk from Collonges-la-Rouge
  • A 20-minute drive from the Dordogne river; 45 minutes from Rocamadour
  • High-season activities on site, and free access to local open-air pool
Setting off to take in the sights of Collonges-la-Rouge? It's a fine choice – this gorgeous medieval gem is known for its red-hued buildings and 25 towers, and is quite rightly named among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. And Camping de Collonges-la-Rouge is an equally fine choice: this popular family-friendly site is surrounded by Corrèze countryside around 15 minutes’ walk from the village centre. Wandering around the village must be your first port of call, of course, but it’s far from the only attraction around these parts: this is also a great location for local hiking trails (which run from five to 14 kilometres), geocaching and rock climbing. Get out and about by canoe on the Dordogne river or cruise downstream in a traditional gabare wooden boat from Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne. Take your time visiting châteaux, pretty little villages and attractions like La Forêt des Singes and the Padirac Cave. Downtime back on site will be spent at a park that’s spread over four hectares, with plenty of shade from oak and maple trees dotted around the place. Facilities include a pétanque court, table tennis and a recreation room with TV and games. In high season there’s also a programme of activities on site, and you'll get free access to the municipal open-air pool (which has waterslides, a paddling pool and a water play area).

Liked: The swimming pool with water slides was a huge hit with the kids. We didn't eat in the restaurant, but went for drinks and the staff were welcoming and helpful and we really enjoyed our evening. The activities provided were just enough and my daughter enjoyed kids club. The proximity to such a beautiful town was a real highlight. Beautiful architecture with lots of history made it a lovely walk in for drinks, tapas and ice creams.

Disliked: The toilet and shower facilities could do with a bit of attention. Everything in full working order with nice hot showers, but the whole building could do with a good power wash and deep clean.

Unpowered grass and gravel site

Liked: Very friendly and helpful staff. Large shaded pitches. Lovely short walk from the site into the beautiful village of Collonges-la-Rouge.

Disliked: Need an adapter with a French plug for the electric hookup. However reception was able to lend us one. Phew!

Liked: On our tour of France this is the most beautiful campsite that we have stayed at. It was out of season so the trees and bushes were not in bloom but we imagine the site to be stunning later in the season. The short walk to the lovely village is great and we recommend eating at the restaurant at the bottom end of the village.

Local attractions

Get to grips with the Dordogne region’s charm by exploring hilltop villages with cobbled backstreets and terrace restaurants with river views. Rocamadour (45 minutes’ drive) certainly ticks all the boxes, and so do the cute medieval hamlets of Turenne and Curemonte (both 15 minutes). Grand châteaux are part of local history too. Almost on the doorstep, red-stone Château de Vassinhac (10 minutes’ walk) is open for tours of its restored turrets and dungeons. A bit further away, there are spectacular Dordogne Valley views from the towers of the imposing Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux (40 minutes' drive). For the kids to let off steam, take them to the Monkey Forest, where Barbary macaques roam free, or to watch vultures and eagles in flying displays at Rocher des Aigles Ecopark (both 40 minutes). If that’s not enough to tire them out, try the treetop rope trails at Nature Evasion adventure park (20 minutes).
