  • Family-friendly site in Sournia, between mountains and beaches
  • Great spot for hiking and cycling; GR36 walking route nearby
  • Outdoor swimming pool with sun loungers and snack bar serving pizzas
If you’re after a spot where you can trek through the hills one day and laze by the sea the next, Camping La Source is the one for you – it’s also got pretty green views thrown in as an added bonus. This family-friendly site in Sournia, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, is sandwiched between mountains and beaches, so your hols can be as active (or as non-active) as you desire. Hiking (the GR36 walking route passes nearby), mountain biking, canoeing and rafting are in the area if you fancy energetic explores, or you can opt to chill on the beaches of Canet-en-Roussillon, Saint-Cyprien and Argelès-sur-Mer (all within an hour's drive). If even that sounds like too much effort, take it easy on site instead – there’s an outdoor swimming pool with sun loungers to sprawl on, and the snack bar serves up pizzas, paninis, salads and ice creams to satisfy food cravings (the wifi at the snack bar comes in handy, too). Kids are catered for with a playground, inflatable castle and ping-pong table, and the site puts on entertainment during the summer months – including live music, karaoke and games. The communal barbecue area is a good shout for evening eats, but the site's also just a few minutes’ walk from Sournia’s restaurants, bars and supermarkets if you fancy heading out for food.

Local attractions

An equestrian centre is a 10-minute walk away for those keen to explore the landscape on horseback or hire a bit of donkey-shaped company when heading out on a hike. As for man-made sights, check out the impressive Roman Aqueduct Bridge of Ansignan (half an hour’s drive), view the various archaeological treasures at the Château Musée de Belesta (half an hour) or visit the Abbey of Saint Michel de Cuxa (45 minutes) to marvel at the Benedictine building. Castle fans are in for a treat too – there are plenty around, including the medieval Cathar castles Château de Queribus, Château de Peyrepertuse and Château de Puilaurens, all around an hour’s drive away. Need a break from all the history? Turn attentions to gorgeous spots formed by geology at the formations of Les Orgues d'Ille-sur-Tet (35 minutes). Waterparks are also plentiful around these parts, with Aqualand Port Leucate, Aqualand Saint Cyprien and Tropical Jump all about an hour away.
