  • Peaceful woodland holiday village in the southern Cévennes
  • A kilometre from the Gardon river and three from Saint-Jean-du-Gard
  • Indoor summer pool, sunbathing terrace, bar, archery and excursions
Les gîtes and le Gardon... how le fab. The gîtes are the swish accommodation on offer at the Gard department's Les Gîtes de Ravel, all kitted out with smart essentials – including a full-sized kitchen – so you can have a well-equipped and cosy stay. They're on a small and peaceful woodland holiday village in the southern Cévennes, a kilometre from the Gardon river for canoeing and kayaking excursions arranged in summer by the site team. Your wooded and woodland setting is across three hectares of pine and chestnut trees, in a colourful and comely landscape with plenty of space, seating areas, flowers and shrubs. You'll probably spend much of your time here at the big heated pool, which is uncovered in warm weather for dips under the Cévennes rays and sunbathing on the loungers alongside: after that, make your way to the pretty terrace of the site bar, for sipping drinks under the shade of the trees. Elsewhere around the site, there's sport such as archery to aim at, a games corner with table football, ping pong and pétanque, and a nicely-sized playground with hut and slides (more seating is next to here). A clay tennis court is available for hire. Around the area, Les Gîtes de Ravel is two kilometres from famed Saint-Jean-du-Gard and the Cévennes steam train, and within easy reach of the Robert Louis Stevenson Trail and the vast galleries of the Grotte de Trabuc. Staff organise activities such as pétanque and ping pong tournaments, aqua aerobics, hiking, via ferrata trips and canyoning during July and August. Barbecues are allowed. Friendly dogs are welcome.

Local attractions

Take the famed and highly scenic Cévennes steam train from neighbouring Saint-Jean-du-Gard to the botanic gardens and maze at the Bambouseraie de Prafrance bamboo garden, then onto the pretty pottery town of Anduze. Cordeliers Parc just outside Anduze is a handsome option for a garden-based stroll. You're in esteemed company if you'd rather hike or bike this part of the Cévennes, as this was the setting of Robert Louis Stevenson's work Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes. The nearby Robert Louis Stevenson Trail or GR 70 follows the writer's route: you might be relieved to hear that these days donkeys are optional (although if you'd like to trot around, a horse riding centre is a kilometre away). For ancient history, the huge caverns of the Grotte de Trabuc, the biggest network of underground passages in the Cévennes at 1,200 metres, are within 20 minutes' drive.
