- Gardon riverside site just outside the Cévennes National Park
- Three kilometres from Saint-Jean-du-Gard
- Two pools, water playground, restaurant, play area and sports courts
A riverside site is, you might think, splendid enough for a holiday anywhere. But there's quite a bit more to the excellent setting of Camping Mas de la Cam in the Gard.
As well as its scenic locale on the banks of the Gardon, the 65 hectares of Mas de la Cam are just outside the Cévennes National Park, three kilometres from Saint-Jean-du-Gard, within 10 kilometres of canyoning at Soucy Canyon, and close to horse riding, treetop adventuring and the 272 kilometres of the Robert Louis Stevenson Trail.
Several hiking trails run from the village and the team organises guided cycle trips on local roads during the summer months. There's no bike path from St Jean du Gard but cycling circuits (road and not mountain bike) run from the site.
In summer, a temporary dam creates a safe area in the river for fishing, swimming and sailing small boats. Other site-based options are splashing around in the two pools (one with a play area with geyser and waterfall) and in the water-based playground, or having a more leisurely time working your way through the menu at the site restaurant.
Also on site are a big playground, a tennis court and a pétanque court, a roomy multisports pitch and courts for volleyball and basketball. The grocery shop has fresh bread delivered daily.

Local attractions
Hiking trails and road cycling start from Saint-Jean-du-Gard: ask the Camping Mas de la Cam team for recommendations or join in with one of the organised cycle tours in high season.
Saint-Jean-du-Gard's also the starting point for the Cévennes steam train, running scenically for 10 kilometres to Anduze. Both towns have tree climbing parks for the energetic; less adventurously, the train journey includes a stopoff at the Bambouseraie de Prafrance botanical and bamboo gardens, about six kilometres from Saint-Jean.
If you're new to canyoning but keen to try, the waters of the Canyon du Soucy seven kilometres away are topping to dip your toe into for the first time: there's a fairly easy descent where the Gardon narrows, along with high jumps for the experienced and easy bypasses along the riverbank if there's an obstacle you don't want to tackle.
Within 10 kilometres is the Desert Museum, not about an arid area but covering the Huguenot period and the history of the Camisards from the post-Reformation 'Desert' period between 1685 and 1787. Hiding places, weapons, maps and paintings are all here, along with events and family activities in summer.
