  • Peaceful dog-friendly site 200 metres from Lac de Villegusien
  • A 20-minute walk from a watersports centre with canoe and kayak rental
  • Outdoor pool and entertainment; windsurfing, tennis and boating
So you’re heading to Haute-Marne with windsurfing, boating and peaceful swims in mind? Take your map in hand and circle Camping du Lac de la Villegusien. Just 200 metres from Lac de Villegusien and one kilometre from the centre of Villegusien-le-Lac in Grand Est, this dog-friendly site is all about holidays dabbling in watersports, visiting local watermills and unwinding by the pool. That’s right – there’s an outdoor swimming pool on site for those of you who’d like to toss a ball back and forth or practise your front stroke. If you’re the sporty type, get strapped in for the site’s windsurfing and boating activities. On dry land, there’s a tennis court or a table tennis court too. Of course, you might want to add to your watersports skillset by taking the 20-minute stroll to the local watersports’ centre, which will rent you a canoe, catamaran or kayak. Mountain biking and archery are also on the agenda there. So, what’s the atmosphere like on site, aside from guests carrying their watersports gear to the lake or skipping down to the river, which is also 700 metres away? Well, in the high season, there’s entertainment such as concerts to liven up your nights. You’ll also catch animals lounging on the pitches, as this is a dog-friendly place. Peaceful, friendly and green are some other words that sum up Camping du Lac de la Villegusien. Facilities-wise, are shower and toilets, a launderette, washing-up area and disabled facilities.

Liked: Very friendly site, Elizabeth spoke good English & was helpful. Lively bar & restaurant, which the local village seems to use too, at reasonable prices. Pool was clean & not busy. Great stopover!! WiFi free & good signal.

Disliked: We parked close to the bar area (our choice) & it was busy with people coming & going (in cars) until 11.30pm - (Friday night). If we weren’t leaving early we would definitely have joined in. Just a heads up/ not a moan- if you’re using here as a sleep stop off (or if you have kids) choose to park at the back of the site. No Paper in the loos :(

Liked: Amazing campsite with fantastic views of the mountains all around. We stayed for 5 nights and found it quiet and peaceful. The train runs through but is not a problem. You park away from your tent which means there are no car doors slamming at night or early in the morning. The facilities are fairly basic but very clean.

Disliked: The water in the showers could be a bit hotter. It wasn’t cold though.

Liked: Swift service, got to choose our own pitch. Reasonable price. Pitches well played out, peaceful and private. We found level ground and it was easy to pitch. Great facilities, very clean and well stocked. Even though we didn't go in a cabin, they looked incredible from the outside with the simple structure. We are inspired to build one similar.

Liked: The swimming pool, even though it wasn't heated.

Disliked: Lack of organised pitches (it is basically a free for all when you arrive). It is not easy to work out the boundaries or numbers, with some being single pitches and some joint and all being various sizes). No-one helps you or gives you any instructions because you just get told to find any pitch and park up. The whole site just looks like an unorganised mess of pitches. Not all the pitches are level because some are on a fairly steep slope. The staff generally come across as not caring less about providing a good customer service or literally any customer service whatsoever. We felt that the staff were racist towards us bearing in mind that we had done nothing wrong to anyone. When we went to order food from the restaurant they claimed to have no food even though they were serving people when we arrive and carried on serving after us. (This was also after they had messed us about for an hour by saying that we needed to come back later when the restaurant was clearly open at the time). We were disgusted because obviously they just didn't want to serve us, and as a family with two children (one severely disabled) we were all hungry and exhausted. They claim to be a disability friendly site, well that's a joke. Just any kind of friendly customer service would have been nice. When we arrived, the reception wasn't even open. Pitchup says 4pm, yet they didn't bother to turn up until 5pm and there was not even a sorry from them. The rest of my family were boiling hot in our motorhome, just waiting and waiting. My disabled child was having a meltdown as well. Clearly, we weren't the only ones who had turned up before 5pm because there was a huge queue of motorhomes and cars/caravans going all the way back to the road after us. I dread to think how long they all would have waited for their pitches. behind us. I've never seen anything like it and I've stayed at quite a few sites. We were luckily second in the queue but we still had to wait about 30 minutes for someone to turn up with such an arrogant, uncaring attitude. How can they not notice or care about the queue of vehicles and people waiting to check-in to their pitch? The staff can barely speak English. I'm not that arrogant to expect other people to speak my language but when you are running a campsite, with all kinds of nationalities turning up, don't bother advertising your site to the British people unless you care enough to learn the English language to an appropriate standard. Also, don't be racist towards the British by refusing to serve them food after messing them about for an hour. Wifi didn't work - we clicked on it but no internet was available. Showers/toilets were very basic - they didn't look particularly clean and there certainly wasn't enough of them for the amount of people on that site in peak season.

Local attractions

Kick off a cultural tour with a visit to a local watermill: dinner at The mill over water (five minutes’ drive) or a look around the Baissey (10 minutes) watermill used in Roman times, perhaps? There are also unusual stone snails at Escargots de Cohons (10 minutes). There’s plenty for those who have kids to think of, such as tree-climbing activities in Accrofolie (an hour), paintballing at Paintball & Activités (an hour and five minutes) and theme park rides in Nigloland (an hour and 10 minutes). Perhaps, they’ll want to run barefoot around the mazes at Farm Adventure (an hour and a half) or tour a goat farm at La Ferme Du Charme Du Moulin (an hour and a half). More peaceful days out include garden picnics in the gorgeous Domaine De Verybelle (50 minutes’ walk) or Silière Garden (10 minutes). Wildlife is easy to locate too. Gorges de la Vingeanne (15 minutes) is the only limestone canyon in Haute-Marne and a hot hiking destination, while Langres (20 minutes) has three rivers and the Réserve naturelle nationale de Chalmessin (25 minutes) has heaps of marsh wildlife.
