Fishing, forest walks and family fun round the firepit – that’s life at La Cheminée Rouge, a relaxed rural retreat within the 85-acre China Lakes park, 15 minutes’ drive from the Morbihan town of Le Faouët. Fresh-air frolics can be had at all hours here: use the daylight to dangle a rod in the lakes in search of carp or catfish, perfect your pétanque technique or accompany the smalls to the woodland playground. After dusk falls, gather round the communal firepit for stargazing, singsongs and marshmallow melts before trotting off for (hopefully) a good night’s slumber in this peaceful place. For eats, guests can grill their own on the communal barbecue or grab a table at the bar/restaurant – take your pick from the cosy indoor space (complete with pool table for games while you sip your drink or await your dinner) and the lovely lakeside terrace. In high season the restaurant also hosts occasional live bands, dancing and sociable barbecue nights. Away from the site there are many ways to spend your days – it’ll take you around 45 minutes to drive to the coast for beaches and watersports, or to visit the walled town of Concarneau; closer to home, the towns of Le Faouët, Scaër and Quimperlé are all great places to potter around in.

Local attractions

It’s a 40-minute drive from the site to the village of Pont-Aven, a place that inspired great things from artist Paul Gauguin. Visit the town’s art museum to see a collection of Impressionist paintings, then take a walk along the hour-long riverside trail through the Bois d'Amour for some real-life gorgeous views (perhaps pack art materials of your own in case the urge takes you…) Just outside town is the Labyrinthe de Pont-Aven, a fab place for family fun – fight your way out of the themed mazes (perhaps encountering some well-known characters along the way), play giant wooden games and make new furry friends at the mini farm. Another 10 minutes or so in the car and you’ll hit the coast – the beaches of Guidel Plage, Port Manech and Le Pouldu are top picks for chilled days or active times surfing, playing beach volleyball or taking watersports kit out on the waves. The coastal walled town of Concarneau is also well worth a visit.
