- Woodland site in the south of Brittany
- Overlooking the Baie de Douarnenez and 500 metres from a sandy beach
- Within walking distance of Douarnenez and the spectacular GR 34 path
This site is named after the bay it overlooks, and how smashingly sensible too – the spectacular Baie de Douarnenez in Brittany's Finistère region is a vast expanse over 16 kilometres wide and 20 kilometres long. And it's rightly famed around these parts for its stunning setting, golden beaches, cracking coastal hikes and fine blue waters... you may yearn to name yourself after it when you pitch up here.
It's an amble of only a few minutes from Camping Douarnenez to the wide sands of Sables Blancs, a fine Finistère beach famed for its surfing and its family-friendly vibe. Energetic sorts have coastal hiking from here too, along the GR 34 or customs path running for over 1,800 kilometres along the Brittany coast... and among views so splendid you'll be stopping every couple of minutes to snap pics.
And your base? Settle down on spacious grassy pitches among woodland, with a pick of sunny or shaded areas, on a well-kept park with pleasant and comfy amenities hailed as spotlessly clean by former guests. You can park right alongside your pitch – most nifty if you have piles of barbecue kit/Breton beers – and there's room aplenty for the kids to run about while the grownups are getting the barbie set up.
The site also has a snack wagon open in summer and a small shop selling essentials and regional produce; order bread and pastries here for the next morning. An internet point is in the shop and free wifi is at reception.
For more leisurely hours, the pretty outdoor pool opens the day the site does, and has handsome views over that most viewsome bay.

Local attractions
Coves, golden beaches, rocky coastline and old fishing villages... what a bay this is...
If you can't quite manage a long enough hol to hike the full 1,800-kilometre length of the GR 34 (tsk), an alternative option is the splendid Douarnenez Sardine Trail, meandering from town to the old port of Rosmeur which was once home to hundreds of sardine fishing boats. You'll pass the teeny village of Plomarc'h along the way, a small hillside settlement overlooking the port and the bay, and these days home to an animal park and critters ambling around.
Those seeking to delve into local history and fishing heritage can potter around Douarnenez's Port Musée too, one that should enthrall even les enfants because of its floating museum on five harbourside boats. You can also drop into the town tourist office to see what guided tours are on offer when you're there, and keep an eye out for info on Douarnenez's historic festivals including the boat festivals and the Fête des Mouettes.
