- Peaceful site with 300 metres of riverbank in Arcy-sur-Cure
- Within a half-hour drive of Auxerre and Avallon
- Fishing and activities on site; prehistoric caves a half-hour walk
An island escape in the Burgundy area? Well, not quite… Camping l'Isle Saint Jean is in fact attached to the mainland, but you’d be forgiven for thinking you were surrounded by water given the site’s generous 300 metres of frontage on to the Cure river.
With all that riverbank comes the opportunity to fish or to settle down for some quiet time looking out at the flowing waters – both of these options being enhanced by surrounds that are filled with flowers and trees for that peaceful rural vibe (and some shade should you need it on a warm day).
In the presence of those that get twitchy if they have to sit down for too long? Point them towards the playground or pétanque court, or peruse the activity programme put together by site manager Yves – through high season you can expect sporting endeavours by day and live music or sociable drinks gatherings of an evening.
More activity? The local village, Arcy-sur-Cure, an easy five-minute amble away, offers up tennis, football and volleyball as well as being the starting point for hikes and horse riding. It’s also got a train station for those planning to roam by public transport, and a collection of places to sort food (including a grocery store, bakery and artisan cheese shop).
If you’re after something more substantial than bread and cheese (although both are excellent around here), head to the site’s snack bar for classic dishes such as moules-frîtes, buckwheat pancakes and entrecôte steaks.
Other facilities on site include wifi, a launderette and a modern bathroom block with heating.

Local attractions
The place to start for inspiration on local activities is the site’s reception area, which has stacks of info on outings including canoeing, horse riding, climbing, bike rental and hot air balloon flights.
Those who like to explore on foot should certainly kick off their stay with a walk to the excellent Arcy-sur-Cure Caves (two and a half kilometres south) to see both natural limestone formations and rock paintings that have survived since prehistoric times. Head north instead and a walk of just over an hour should get you to Reigny Abbey to see a mix of buildings from across the ages (some dating back to the 14th century).
There’s also much wandering to be done in the nearby town of Avallon (25 minutes’ drive) – a particularly pretty place with an old town accessed via a 15th-century gateway and home to all sorts of turrets, towers and fortifications. If you like that, you’ll probably also want to make time for Auxerre (half an hour) for half-timbered houses, medieval streets and plenty of cafés.
