Those whose French getaways hinge on seeing a château or two will be well served hereabouts. The site’s half an hour’s drive from the stunning Château de la Verrerie (a 15th-century castle where opting for the theatrical tour is a must), and within 45 minutes of tours and wine tastings at Château de Couches and garden explores at Château de Drée. It’s also within an hour of tours at the privately owned Château de Rully (which also has wine tastings), the spectacular moated Château de Cormatin and its 10-hectare gardens, and the largest Renaissance-style château in southern Burgundy, Château de Sully, with its park, garden, boutique and tearoom. That’s far from the only history nearby either. The site’s 40 minutes from the Gaulish fortified city of Bibracte – an ancient hillfort where guests can learn the history of Vercingetorix’s fights against Caesar – and from the Roman arena, ruined temple, Pyramid of Couhard and museum dotted around the narrow medieval streets of Autun. Hunger building after all this exploring? The weekly markets in Autun may just satisfy… Prefer to stick to more nature-filled days? It’s a 20-minute car journey to the edge of Morvan Regional Nature Park, where hikes, bikes and forest trails aplenty are waiting to be undertaken, and a little under an hour from Arboretum de Pézanin.
