  • Small family-run rural site in the Morvan Regional Natural Park
  • 20 minutes' drive from the Roman town of Autun
  • Swimming pool, cosy bar and bike hire on site
Hiking, biking, sailing and vineyard visits by day, followed by retreating back to base to watch the sun set with a glass of local vino in hand – sound like a schedule you could get on board with? If so, set a course for Camping Espace-Vital, overlooking a valley with views towards Mont Beuvray in the Morvan Regional Natural Park. Settle in here to spend days roaming the park’s trails on foot or by bike (which you can hire from the site if you’ve not brought your own trusty steed), or head to Lac des Settons for sailing, canoeing, paddleboarding, fishing, lake swimming or beach basking. Cultural and historic days out are sorted in nearby Autun, Château de Sully and the Gaulish town of Bibracte, and the Burgundy vineyards are about an hour away by car for tours and sampling.. There’s a bar on site – a cosy little spot with a fireplace to keep you toasty on chillier days and wifi for keeping tabs on the outside world. For warmer days there's a small pool for cooling dips, near a play area for les enfants when they tire of splashing about. For eats, you’re welcome/encouraged to light up a barbecue to conjure up an alfresco feast – there’s a small shop on site, along with a small supermarket and a bakery 10 minutes’ drive away in Saint-Léger-sous-Beuvray for all the necessaries.

Local attractions

Autun, 20 minutes away, is well worth a visit – wander round its ancient ramparts, visit the cathedral and explore the Roman ruins including the amphitheatre and the Temple of Janus. It’s also a fine place to poke about in the market (Wednesdays and Fridays) or relax in a café with a coffee (look out for the local Talleyrand blend) and a cake. A little further beyond Autun (an hour’s drive from the site) is a cluster of wineries where you can take tours and sample the Burgundy region’s famed reds, whites and sparklers. If you want to sound a little more learned on the subject of wine, make a slight detour up to Beaune and its wine museum to find out a bit more about the process as well as seeing some wine-inspired artworks. Other cultural visits nearby include the Gaulish site at Bibracte, 15 minutes’ drive away, and the moated medieval Château de Sully, within half an hour.
