- Secluded naturist retreat near Saint-Michel-de-Montjoie in Normandy
- An hour’s drive from Normandy battlefields; 40 minutes to Domfront
- Barbecue, Jacuzzi and dipping pool; five minutes’ drive to shops
A secluded valley surrounded by farmland makes an ideal spot for Fern Fields Naturist Retreat, tucked among ferns and trees in a landscape strewn with granite boulders. Here you can unwind and roam around the grounds just as nature intended, while owners Mark and Caroline are always on hand to offer tips about where to go and what to see locally.
All guests have free use of the hot tub and heated dip pool – and although nudity is not compulsory on site, the owners ask that you don’t wear costumes in the tub or pool.
There are sunbathing areas around the poly-tunnel area, the granite rock field and among the trees. Mark and Caroline have thoughtfully provided outdoor seating and some sun loungers, as well as hammocks in the woodland so you can really kick back and relax in nature.
You can get together with fellow campers around the communal campfire and barbecue area – pick up bits and pieces to grill from the local villages of Gathemo or St. Pois (both five minutes) – to share stories of your day’s adventures, chat informally and play music.
A word of warning: parts of the site are unlit, so make sure you bring a good-quality torch for moving around after dark.

Local attractions
The nearby village of Saint-Michel-de-Montjoie (five minutes’ drive) was formerly a granite-mining village and has a bijou but interesting museum detailing its industrial heritage alongside some fine pieces of granite art. Some much older stone formations can be seen at Dolmen de la Loge aux Sarrazins (15 minutes), a well-preserved burial site dating from prehistoric times.
Fern Fields Naturist Retreat is also a handy base for tours of the WWII Normandy Battlefields around Caen, including the Pegasus Memorial (both an hour and 10 minutes).
A fascinating day out up on the coast is Mont-Saint-Michel (an hour), where you can explore the winding streets leading up to an abbey with origins in the fifth century. Closer to base camp, Domfront (40 minutes) has photogenic remains of a medieval castle, the striking Église Saint-Julien de Domfront church, built in the 1920s and with a spectacular, gilded interior. This lively town also offers up plenty of opportunities to enjoy bistro food in cosy pavement cafés.
