The swimming pool

  • On the banks of the Alagnon river in Lempdes-sur-Allagnon
  • Just outside the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park
  • Swimming pool, tennis court, play areas and snack bar on site
The name of this Auvergne site could hardly be more appropriate, for Camping Le Pont d’Allagnon is right on the banks of the Alagnon river, just by the bridge that leads to the shops and restaurants in Lempdes-sur-Allagnon a few minutes’ walk away. This is a handy location for getting out and about: it’s at the meeting point of three departments (Haute Loire, Puy de Dôme and Cantal), and a mere few kilometres from the edge of both the Auvergne Volcanoes and Livradois-Forez regional natural parks. Such surrounds put lakeside hikes, canoe trips and mountain bike outings within easy reach, along with scenic volcano ascents. Clearly there’s plenty to do in the area around the site, but it’s also worth noting that this place makes a handy stopover on journeys north or south as it’s handily placed close to two junctions of the A75. There’s town action not too far away too – Issoire and Brioude are both within 20 minutes’ drive for amenities such as supermarkets. Whether stopping over or sticking around, there are plenty of facilities around the two-hectare site to keep everyone active, including an open-air pool, tennis court, pétanque court and beach volleyball area. Kids can keep playtime going in all weathers either out at the playground or retreating indoors to the playroom. For eats and drinks, the snack bar terrace is the place to be, whether you’re in the mood for a roast chicken dinner, a snack of pancakes, a chilled cocktail or something from the selection of artisan ice creams. There’s also a shop with local produce, and a mobile farm shop pops round with fresh fruit and veg once a week in high season.

Liked: Alle faciliteiten die de camping te bieden heeft. De rivier naast de camping waar je met een leuk bruggetje overheen loopt om naar het dorpje te gaan. De rust op de camping, heerlijk.

Liked: Toilet block

Disliked: The fact that most of the advertised amenities were out of use (eg goats on the mini golf area), that the welcome from reception was luke warm ( to say the least), the fact that we couldn’t have any chips on a Tuesday, that the pitches felt small and very overlooked!

Liked: Everything! The site is peaceful, clean and welcoming. We only stopped for a night on our way down to Spain but have already made plans to come back as there’s so much to do and see in the area and we’d love to have stayed longer. Toilets/showers are clean and the little on site bar serves excellent local wine. It does food too but we didn’t try that.

Disliked: Nothing!

Liked: Lovely quiet site next not far from A75. Lots of birds and friendly chickens who spent the afternoon with us. Showers were a bit dated but spotlessly clean and hot. Lovely size pitches

Disliked: Although a shop and bar was advertised as being open they were closed.

Local attractions

Come to this part of the world for the outdoorsy activities? Warm your legs up with a stroll among the colourful fairy chimney rock formations of the Vallée des Saints (half an hour’s drive), then prep for an ascent of Puy de Dôme volcano (an hour). If you’re not up for shinning up a volcano, you can still take in the scenery by riding up in a rack railway – and learn a bit about what’s going on under the surface at Vulcania interactive museum. Anyone who’s ever fancied running off to live in a cave may like to step inside the troglodyte village at Jonas caves (40 minutes); for rather smarter living quarters, check out the elegant rooms of the ‘mini Versailles’ Château de Parentignat (15 minutes) or Château de Villeneuve-Lembron (20 minutes). If you’d rather take a stroll alongside some cute critters, aim for Auvergne Animal Park (20 minutes) or meet the exotic residents of Saint Nectaire Educational Park (45 minutes).
