There are plenty of those around Camping Onlycamp Les Monts du Cantal – this attractive Cantal site is in a central spot in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park, with the peaks forming a gorgeous backdrop for the pitches. Those views will give you a small taste of what else might be in store while you’re staying here – this place makes a great base for hiking, climbing and paragliding or gentler days of waterfall walks, wild swims and fishing. You may also like to visit medieval towns like Murat and Salers, or visit a couple of the area’s châteaux. Try not to pack your days too full though, so you can spend some time simply chilling out at this laidback site. It’s on the banks of the Petite Rhue river for fishing and paddling, and there are tennis and pétanque courts as well as a play area for your youngsters. A bread delivery service from a local bakery means leisurely breakfasts can be on the cards, and there’s a small grocery store on site with regional produce for your picnics. Pitches are equally well designed for relaxing – they’re spacious, scenic, semi-shaded and sheltered by trees, and all have handy (optional) electric hook-ups. Facilities include modern shower and loo blocks, with washing-up sinks and a baby-changing area (plus kids’ equipment like high chairs for hire).

Great mountain spot, perfect for paragliding & Puy Mary visits. Lovely welcome, clean/modern facilities, spacious pitches. Some upgrades noted. Older comments mentioned unlevel/undemarcated pitches, but hedges are being planted. No motorhome waste/water points noted June '26. Wind can carry smells from a nearby plant.

Liked Great quiet and empty rural location for visiting the surrounding mountains and Puy Mary. The small village of Claux is close by. Friendly, helpful owners/staff. Nice toilets/showers. Good for a couple of days cycling which is what we went there for. High up so a bit cooler in hot weather.

Disliked Despite as is mentioned on Pitch-up, there is NO chemical toilet emptying and there is NO motorhome water filling point. If you go to their website these points are mentioned. The site is quite open with no privacy of emplacements, but hedges are being grown. Village chiming church clock a bit annoying - although it is usually off from midnight to 7am.

Liked Très belle endroit pleine nature, au cœur des montagnes, calme et proche de l'atterrissage des parapentistes (spectacle garantie). Les sanitaires sont neufs, très propres, pratiques (plusieurs étagères pour poser nos affaires). Emplacements très spacieux, verts et ombragés.

Disliked Pas de réels délimitations des emplacements (manque des haies pour plus t'intimité). Mais, les buissons sont en court de pousse (le camping vient juste d'être ouvert). On ne comprends comment circuler en voiture pour accéder aux emplacements (à améliorer). Autre point, certaines parcelles sont en pente, voir si possibilité de stabiliser les sols où l'on met les tentes. Dernier regret, la station d'épuration proche du camping et selon le sens du vent cela peut être gênant.

Local attractions

You’ll have seen some volcanic peaks from your pitch, but no doubt you’ll want to take a closer look. A couple of good options nearby are Puy Mary (15 minutes’ drive) and Puy de la Tourte (20 minutes) – both have great circular trails to follow. Puy Mary is also a popular spot for paragliding, with beginner tandem flights available for those who’d like to see some of this stunning scenery from above. Back down on solid ground, there are more walks at places like Cascade du Sartre (10 minutes) or Gorges de la Rhue (40 minutes), where you can also take a cool dip in the river. Lac de Lastioulles (45 minutes) also has a lake beach for swimming, plus watersports like canoeing and sailing. For a dip into local history, make tracks to Murat (25 minutes), where the Rocher de Bonnevie looms over lava-stone houses and cobbled streets, or Salers (45 minutes), a medieval gem named among the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in France’ and with lots of well-preserved traditional architecture. Château d’Auzers (40 minutes) and Château de Pesteils (an hour) both have excellent guided tours for all ages.
