Harbouring a secret (or not so secret) urge to abandon normal life and run off to a little cabin in the woods? Bring such fantasies to life with a stay at Domaine de la Fontaine de Biron, a chalet park spread out over 12 acres of Aquitaine woodland, a couple of minutes’ drive from the teeny village of Vergt-de-Biron. There’s no roughing it at these particular woodland hideaways – each has a well-stocked kitchen, a comfy living area, a shower room and a covered deck with barbecue (and a view of the woods, not your neighbours…). Bits for the barbecue and bottles for the fridge can be acquired at the supermarkets 10 minutes’ drive away in Villeréal. Feel free to spend your hols cosied up in your little rural retreat should you wish, but if you’d like to see a little more of your surrounds, it’s a fine idea to start with a walk on one of the marked trails starting from the site. Beyond that, suitably country-themed outings might include boat trips, canoe paddles, castle explores, treetop adventures, horse riding and (highly recommended) winery wanders. Once returned to base, cool off in the outdoor pool before a pre-dinner game of pétanque or volleyball (or a trip to the play area if you’ve brought les enfants along). Please note that this is very much a French-speaking site, so those without the relevant lingo skills would do well to pack a phrase book to help things along.

Local attractions

Although the site’s own woods are mighty peaceful, there’s activity to be had elsewhere – such as the Parc en Ciel adventure park (10 minutes’ drive), which has high ropes courses slung through its trees, along with miniature golf, disc golf and other games at ground level. For more outdoor activity, a drive of 45 minutes will get you up to the Dordogne river for traditional gabare boat trips or canoe outings. Horse riding can be had from one of the stables within a 20-minute drive, or you could hire bikes on site for local pottering. A trip to the Dordogne could never be complete without a château or few – tick that off your list with outings to Château de Biron (10 minutes) or head further afield to discover the showbiz history of Château de Milandes (40 minutes) or see the huge stash of weaponry at Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (45 minutes). Folk who’d like to top off their days with a local tipple on their deck should steer themselves towards the wineries around Bergerac or Puy-l’Évêque (both around 40 minutes away).
