Hilly landscapes, vineyards, caves and castles sum up the kind of views you're likely to get while exploring the Dordogne countryside. For somewhere to stay that’s close to all of these scenic spots, set your sights on Koko Holidays at Camping Les Charmes, a great family-friendly option five minutes' drive outside of the village of Saint-André-d'Allas. The accommodation here is located on a well-maintained park with excellent facilities for young and old and, handily, is a quarter of an hour's drive from the pretty medieval centre of Sarlat-la-Canéda. The site's spacious and pet-friendly safari tents have capacity to sleep up to six guests, making them just the job for family get-togethers in the sunny South of France. Each tent has a good deal of privacy with its three separate sleeping areas and campers' kitchen, and there's convenient access to shared facilities including toilets, showers and a restaurant just a short walk away too. There's plenty to keep you entertained at Camping Les Charmes, including a heated indoor and outdoor pools, waterslides, a kids' play area, a tennis court, pétanque and table tennis. Canoeing, walking and cycling can all be easily enjoyed in the local area too, as the site is surrounded by lots of open countryside and several pretty stretches of the Dordogne river.

Local attractions

The castles found both inland and along the river in this pretty part of the Dordogne are well worth exploring. Top examples include the Château de Beynac (15 minutes' drive), a feudal fortress perched on top of a high cliff, and the Château des Milandes (25 minutes), a fancy French Renaissance building once home to Josephine Baker, a famous French-American dancer and résistante. Next, spend a sleepy afternoon or two exploring Sarlat-la-Canéda (15 minutes), where you can slowly sip coffees on a terrace, enjoy an ice cream as you wander through the narrow medieval streets or find local produce to sample at the town's bustling market. Domme (25 minutes), a small town on the southern side of the river, has similar relaxed vibes; your hosts also recommend checking out Monpazier (35 minutes) and Rocamadour (an hour and 10 minutes) if you have the time. To take a break from the driving, you could take a hot air balloon ride and see the landscape from the air, kayak along the river or set out on horseback with a local riding stables (several operators available within 15 minutes' drive).
