It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly campsite surrounded by Périgord Noir countryside
- A quarter of an hour's drive to Sarlat-la-Canéda; Eyrignac 10 minutes
- Large open-air pool complex with waterslides and a jacuzzi
Not yet been to the Périgord Noir? Greenery, gastronomic goodness and lots of space are what you can expect in the scenic rural region around Sarlat-la-Canéda – and Camping La Châtaigneraie in a prime position to get out and see its very best bits.
This well-equipped Dordogne site is excellently set up for chilled-out open-air stays. Spread over nine hectares and surrounded by a natural backdrop of oaks and chestnut trees, Camping La Châtaigneraie is located between the villages of Prats-de-Carlux and Sainte-Nathalène, roughly a quarter of an hour from Sarlat and 10 minutes from the gorgeous historic house and gardens at Eyrignac.
Taking it easy comes naturally in this part of France, but it's made even easier by the site's open-air waterpark, where there are five separate pools to splash around in (or snooze by). Whirlpools, a kids' paddling area, five waterslides, a jacuzzi, sun loungers and parasols all point to the kind of laidback life you can look forward to leading here.
It's a short walk from the poolside to the big, bright and colourful collection of kids' playgrounds, a bar-restaurant, a handy food shop and a laundry room. Evening entertainment, a weekday kids' club and beauty or massage treatments are often on the cards too.

Local attractions
Meandering through the medieval streets of Sarlat-la-Canéda (15 minutes' drive) is a good way to get an idea of what this traditional truffle and wine-growing region's food scene is all about – especially on market days. The sandstone cathedral, Place du Peyrou square and birthplace of famed French humanist philosopher Étienne de La Boétie are all also worth a look.
Out in the Causses du Quercy (roughly half an hour), there are lots of extremely pretty spots worth exploring – the ancient pilgrim village of Rocamadour (50 minutes), for instance, is a must-see with its ancient architecture and spiritual atmosphere. Meanwhile, down in Domme (25 minutes) you have a fortified bastide village to explore, with lots of narrow alleyways full of authentic local restaurants.
To the north, the well-preserved town of Montignac (30 minutes) on the Vézère river makes a good day trip too, whether you're after prehistoric paintings at the Lascaux caves or fancy hiring a canoe and sailing downstream through the pretty Dordogne countryside. For more time by the water, set your satnav to Étang De Tamniès lake (20 minutes) for wild swims or a go on its floating inflatable obstacle course.
