- Dog-friendly chalets set around the edge of a pond in the Périgord
- A 20-minute drive from Villars Cave and walks and cycling nearby
- Play areas and a bar with a terrace on site; order snacks too
Getting away to the green Périgord? Waste no time in prepping your essential getaway kit for Domaine De Vivale. Hiking boots are one essential, since this dog-friendly place is located in the Périgord-Limousin Natural Regional Park, known for its limestone plateaus, cliffs, forests and rivers.
A book or binoculars might come in handy too… the chalets are very peaceful and relaxing indeed, set out around the edge of a pond and with views over the greenery, of course.
If you need a mid-chapter snack, snack delivery is available directly to your chalet. There’s a bar with a terrace for any aperitifs (that’s a splendid idea right there). Other gorgeous spots across the site, for swims or play time, include a heated swimming pool (open between June and September) and paddling pool, along with kids’ play areas.
Animals and huge trees are a given at the 30-hectare estate surrounding the chalets. The Plan d'Eau de Mialet is within walking distance of the site if you’re after more in the way of scenery and gorgeous walks or bike rides around a lake.
If you’re in need of any extras such as bed linen, bathroom linen or a baby kit, they’re all available to rent. The washing machine and dryers operate on tokens.
There’s also wifi at the reception, so feel free to set about plotting out your adventures to gorgeous villages like Saint-Jean-de-Côle (20 minutes) and Brantôme (25 minutes, and a splendid spot for canoeing) or Villars Cave (20 minutes), which has prehistoric paintings, stalagmites and an underground river.

Local attractions
Pretend like you’re royalty for a day… it’ll be easy to do so, with so many castles scattered around the Périgord. French-style gardens await at Château de Jumilhac and gardens (20 minutes’ drive) and 12th-century walls at the Château d'Excideuil (40 minutes).
Château de Puyguilhem (25 minutes), Château de Varaignes (40 minutes) and Château de Bourdeilles (40 minutes) are some of their fortified Périgord siblings.
Those who are looking for a generous dose of history won’t go hungry, that’s for sure. Périgueux (55 minutes) has a cathedral with domes and turrets, Roman bath house remains and a Gallo-Roman temple. Limoges (55 minutes) has yet another cathedral and a sprinkling of museums.
Don’t pass by Nontron (25 minutes), known locally as the knife capital. Oradour-sur-Glane (55 minutes) is also a remnant of the past, as the site of a village destroyed by the Germans in June 1944.
