- Safari tents at a family-friendly site near Les Eyzies de Tayac
- A 20-minute drive to the Dordogne river; 25 to Sarlat-la-Canéda
- Outdoor pools, sauna, hot tub, restaurant and summer entertainment
Dordogne-bound and don’t fancy putting up a tent? Pick a stay instead at Villatent at Camping Le Pech Charmant, where smart and well-equipped safari tents are all set up and ready to move into.
Much of what you need is supplied in these tents, including beds and a kitchen unit, and there’s plenty of space to relax just outside too. (If you’ve got small kids or mobility issues, it’s worth noting that the tents are on a hill so there’s a little bit of walking up and and down to do…)
With all the basics easily sorted, that should leave plenty of time to explore all the facilities on site… A good place to start is the open-air swimming pool, in the site’s sunniest spot and with a separate paddling pool and a pool bar to keep the drinks coming as you relax on the loungers. Need a bit more help to relax? Book a slot at the sauna or the hot tub.
Beyond that there’s also a petting zoo, table tennis, a trampoline and a playground, along with an entertainment programme that runs through high season with the likes of shows and games for kids or volleyball games and ghost tours for the teens. Theme nights and performances are on the schedule too, as is a weekly communal meal, where guests gather at long tables every Tuesday for a four-course meal of local dishes.
On other days, the restaurant has an a la carte menu, or you can get to the nearest town, Les Eyzies de Tayac, with a drive of five minutes or half an hour on foot.

Local attractions
Walks, bike rides, donkey walks and horse riding are all excellent ways to see some of the local scenery, but of course if there’s one way to get around in the Dordogne it has to be by canoe or kayak. Head up to Les Eyzies de Tayac for hire centres that will take you out on the Vezère or aim south for about 20 minutes’ drive to tackle the mighty Dordogne itself.
Back on dry land, there’s plenty more to explore locally: the hillside Château de Commarque (20 minutes’ drive) and the colourful subterranean Grotte du Grand Roc (five minutes) are good places to take a wander, as are the National Prehistory Museum and prehistory-themed walk in Les Eyzies.
It’s also a fine idea to take a day over in Sarlat-la-Canéda (25 minutes), a particularly pretty place with a cathedral, an excellent Saturday market and lots of historic streets and squares to stroll through. If you’ve got a head for heights, take a ride in the church’s glass lift for great views over the rooftops.
