  • Accommodation with direct access to Colorada beach at Drake Bay
  • Convenient base for tours to Corcovado National Park and Caño Island
  • Within five minutes’ walk of restaurants; tours bookable on site
It should be hard to turn down a stay within metres of Drake Bay, a vast, tropical Costa Rica beach backed by palm trees and beach bistros. The accommodation at Vista Drake Lodge has direct access to Colorada beach, and perhaps even more handily, the site specialises in rural eco tourism, so tours bookable on site cover night wildlife walks and trips to Corcovado National Park or Caño Island. If this is your first time at Drake Bay, you should know that this is an excellent base for boat trips to Caño Island, a biological reserve famed for its snorkelling and diving. It's a top spot for whale-watching too; from July to October, migrating humpback whales headed from Patagonia to the South Pacific are often spotted in the area, and in December, whales from the north are often sighted too. Corcovado National Park, just south of Drake Bay, is also likely to catch your eye. Thought to be one of the most biodiverse regions on the globe, this national park’s rainforest, mangrove swamps and beaches are home to around 150 mammals, 117 amphibians and 367 birds. Although you may find yourself quite busy taking tours or exploring the local area, it should be nice to know that Vista Drake Lodge, owned by the Gonzalez family, has a nice, covered communal area where you're welcome to unwind. Otherwise, head back to your accommodation after the day's adventures to freshen up before grabbing dinner at one of the local restaurants within five minutes’ walk of the site.

Local attractions

Drake Bay is a top spot for getting out to famed Puntarenas destinations like Caño Island (for snorkelling and diving over colourful coral reefs) or Corcovado National Park (to try your luck at spotting wildlife like sloths, monkeys and tapirs). Tours can also be arranged to the Terraba Sierpe National Wetlands to look for crocs, monkeys and birds. There are also plenty of things to do from Drake Bay that don’t involve booking a tour, too. These include local free trails, where many folks spot monkeys and birds. Take a taxi to dreamy Playa San Josecito (20 minutes’ drive) before hiking back along the quiet Drake Trail to Drake Bay. The site also organises night tours to RIO AGUJITAS FARM (five minutes), which is your chance to keep your eyes peeled for all the interesting little critters that only come out at night. Who says wildlife watching has to be just a daytime activity?
