  • Finca with stunning rainforest views two hours’ drive from Medellín
  • Río Melcocho jungle walk and cacao farm tours 15 minutes’ drive
  • Protected wildlife haven with monkeys, sloths, butterflies and toucans
Come to Cascadia looking for immersion in nature and you won’t be disappointed. At 15 minutes’ drive from Pailania in Antioquia, this 10-acre finca is surrounded by tropical greenery hiding toucans, butterflies, monkeys and sloths. You can go swimming at the foot of waterfalls, dip into the natural pool on site, or simply take a deep breath and soak up spectacular rainforest views from a hammock on your balcony. Accommodation is in a wooden cabin made using traditional methods. Inside it has a stylish kitchen (bring all supplies with you, as food is not provided on site and there are no shops close by), a spacious living and dining area and a bedroom in the eaves. Mosquito nets are provided, and you have indoor and outdoor showers. You can drive from Medellín (two hours by car, the road is paved) or take a bus (two and a half hours) that drops you outside the property. Please be aware that there are lots of steps from the car park up to the cabin, and that humidity and rainfall are high, especially at night. Dogs are welcome only by prior notice, as there are dogs, cats, chickens (providers of fresh eggs) and ducks on the site – please also keep them off the furnishings and beds.

Local attractions

Where to start? Perhaps a jungle walk along pristine Río Melcocho (15 minutes’ drive), or a guided hike through the Valle de las Cascadas (25 minutes) to waterfalls with natural swimming pools at their feet. For shorter walks and picnics by rock pools, try La Poceta (20 minutes) on the Santo Domingo river. More adrenaline-inducing local activities might include whitewater rafting on Río Calderas and Río Verde, or abseiling and canyoning over waterfalls. Push your boundaries that bit further and you could be tandem paragliding over Oriente Antioqueño valleys with stunning views of the region’s rivers and jungle. All these adventures can be organised locally. More cultural pursuits will reveal much about local life: take a guided tour of a working organic cacao farm (15 minutes) and have a go at making chocolate, or watch sugar cane being processed at El Trapiche Botero (20 minutes), where you can buy sweets and linger over a decent cup of Colombian coffee. You can also visit the colonial town of Carmen de Viboral (an hour) to pick up hand-painted pottery from centuries-old ceramics workshops.
