  • Wild-style forest camping pitches at a private property near Minca
  • Trails on site to a hidden waterfall and Pozo Azul natural pools
  • River access for swimming; bathroom and dining facilities provided
If you’ve ever fancied sampling a proper forest camping experience, immersing yourself entirely in stunning natural surroundings, but are a little reluctant to leave behind the safety and facilities of a traditional campsite, then Camping Amazilia could be the place for you… This fabulous spot in the Magdalena province allows you to camp right in the middle of a protected forest reserve, but with the security that comes from staying at a private property. The site is right on the banks of a river, with access via a private riverside path, and pitches are scattered around the forest floor for that truly remote feeling. Despite that secluded atmosphere, it’s actually relatively easy to get to – the bus from Santa Marta to Minca stops about 800 metres away, or you can get a mototaxi from Minca (five kilometres away). Guests are welcome to access the river for a bit of paddling, swimming or wildlife spotting, but you’ll need to be careful as the area is not supervised by lifeguards. To keep everything safe, access to the river isn’t permitted after 5pm. You’ll need to bring along everything you need to set up camp here, but there are several handy facilities to make life comfortable during your stay – it’s about 50 metres from the pitches to the service area, which has toilets and showers with 24-hour access. There’s also a covered dining space there and a picnic patio, which you’re free to use at any time (although you’ll be asked to keep the noise down at night time). As this is a nature reserve, you’ll be asked to respect your surroundings, staying on the trails, keeping fires in designated areas and managing your waste carefully.

Local attractions

No doubt you’ll want to spend most of your time here soaking up the sights and sounds of the forest, so set off along one of the trails through the reserve – with local guides available to show you the hidden spots well off the tourist trail. One of the recommended spots is a 12-metre waterfall that’s about half an hour’s walk from the campsite and often pretty much deserted. More well known are the natural pools at Pozo Azul, but by staying close by you’ll be able to get up early and beat the crowds. Beyond all that, there’s a trail that will take you all the way to Minca for some of the trappings of urban life including fresh coffee and artisanal bread. If you’d like to see where some of that coffee might have come from, stop by at La Victoria plantation (near Pozo Azul) or organise a trip to La Candelaria Farm (20 minutes’ drive), which also grows cacao for chocolate.
