Want to end your hols with the same level of satisfaction as the cat that got the cream? Saunter along to Camping Atliman, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive (and an easy 10-minute walk) from the seaside resort town of Kiten in the Burgas region of Bulgaria. On the Black Sea coast, this is a top spot to settle in for lazy, hazy days: the wooded and leafy site is nice and quiet, so days lying at the foot of a tree or watching the waves roll up and down the beach are not just a cinch – they’re recommended... Speaking of beaches, the nearest is an easy stroll from the site. There’s direct access along a short path as far as the sands of Atliman Bay, so called because of a local legend of a beautiful girl and a flying horse. Follow her lead and canter along here for days splashing about in the Black Sea, soaking up Bulgarian sun and exploring the dunes. Fill up on supplies from the small on-site shop and the vending machines, then make newly energised explores of the coast. A 15-minute jaunt as far as the seaside resort town of Tsarevo will bring active types as far as surfing, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding and rope courses, as well as a mountain biking course.

Local attractions

If the coast continues to beckon, there’s plenty hereabouts to keep you from arguing: start with an afternoon at the waterpark in the seaside resort town of Primorsko, 10 minutes’ drive away, then venture just under half an hour along the coast to the town of Sozopol – it's a prime spot for watersports, but should also lure cinephiles and art aficionados (there’s an art and film festival here every year), as well as history buffs with an interest in Old-Town architecture. The history of this part of Bulgaria goes much further back, of course: within 20 minutes of the site, there are some Thracian remains – an ancient sanctuary called Beglik Tash and a dolmen known as a dragon house – that date from more than 2000 years ago. More recent history is well represented too… The local curio that is the Castle of Ravadinovo is an absolute must 25 minutes away. Built in the fairy-tale style over a 20-year period, it springs from the middle of a field, with towers and steeples grabbing attention and pretty gardens keeping it. For more of all of this, clamber into the car for the 45-minute drive to the city of Burgas, where there are museums, Thracian springs and Roman baths, gardens and lagoons, a zoo and a sand sculpture festival to keep everyone busy.
