It's free, quick and easy!
- Spacious rural site by the Caputera river, close to the town of Pontal
- A 20-minute drive from Angra dos Reis and close to Ilha Grande trips
- Quad biking and horse riding trips; restaurant open all day
Hear the ocean calling? Seeking stopovers in forest surrounds? For a bit of both, check out Recanto Do Pontal Camping, a peaceful rural site on the outskirts of Pontal, a small seaside town in the state of Rio de Janeiro (and a rather swish one at that).
A leisurely 20-minute walk is all it takes for guests to access white sands, a yacht club and a top-notch waterside café. All the amenities of larger Angra dos Reis, meanwhile, are a breezy 20-minute drive down the coast.
This desirable spot is pretty spacious, too: Recanto Do Pontal Camping has 40,000 well-kept square metres to its name, with plenty of shade provided by lush green trees. These branches are also popular with feathered visitors, so keep your eyes peeled for colourful local birds. The estate's waterfall, play area, mini farm and direct access to the Caputera river all make days spent on site that little bit more special.
Peckish times on site should be easily sorted as the restaurant serves up tasty meals thrice daily, while those looking for a lighter lunch can take advantage of the picnic area. Walk 20 minutes into Pontal to pick up fresh bread for your sarnies, or head five kilometres down the road for a supermarket.
In between all their cooking, farm-tending and groundskeeping duties, the friendly site staff somehow manage to organise bike hire, quad biking trips and horse riding jaunts for their guests.

Local attractions
Up for self-paddled boat trips, or maybe a round of golf or two? A nearby outdoor activity centre (15 minutes' drive) has a host of open-air activities for young and old. Of course, if you're heading to this part of Brazil, you'll want to make sure to pack your cossie, towel and flipflops – Pontal beach and sailing club are a 20-minute walk from base. If you're heading beachwards after a hearty meal on site, make sure to save room for a refreshing ice cream from the waterside café.
For more coastal capers, Ilha Grande is on hand for island explores. Set sail for this car-free tropical hotspot by driving 20 minutes down the road and catching a ride on the ferry at Angra dos Reis. Stick around in this mid-sized seaside town for a historic convent, religious art museum and more beauteous beaches.
Up for something a little different? Boffins and laymen alike will find plenty to marvel at if they swing by the nearby Nuclear Observatory museum (30 minutes), where interactive screens and kid-friendly displays help explain the ABC of atom-smashing.
