Want to get to know the natural landscapes of Mato Grosso? You’ll have a fabulously immersive experience when you book a stay at Refúgio das Águas, a gorgeous little resort about 45 minutes' drive from the town of Nobres.
As the name suggests, the highlight of this place is its water feature – the crystal-clear Salobra River, accessed via a well-marked 600-metre trail through the lush forest from the main site. A wooden jetty means easy access for swimming, and you can also sign up for ‘floating’ excursions where you'll travel down the river armed with a snorkel so you can get in and take a good look at the wildlife living under the surface.
The wildlife back on dry land is pretty fine too – the site is surrounded by natural jungle that’s home to all sorts of colourful birds, exotic plants and other native wildlife. You're likely to see some of this on a short walk into the jungle, or even when you're just chilling on site, as birds often land in the trees around the pitches.
Speaking of the pitches, they're spacious and shaded by trees so you should be in for a peaceful stay. There’s a bar on site for cool drinks, but you’ll need to bring your own food (a barbecue area is provided for those who'd like to cook outdoors). Toilets, showers and wifi are all provided, and there's a nice covered hammock area where you can while away a quiet afternoon with a book.

Local attractions
The joy of this place comes from simply settling in to your surroundings, slowing down and soaking up the very special setting. You may like to take a short walk through the jungle, have a swim in the sparkling waters or join one of the floating/snorkelling tours, but otherwise the best activity here is doing very little…
If you do want to get out and about a bit, you could plan trips to some of the other nearby natural attractions like the serene Lagoa das Araras (20 minutes' drive) or Duto do Quebó (40 minutes), where you can float into a cave of bats.
As this is a remote area, any explorations are best done through a guide – check out Bom Jardim Adventure (15 minutes) for quad bike outings or head down to Cuiabá (two hours) for deeper wildlife-spotting jungle expeditions.
