- Family-friendly site with a riverside setting in the Belgian Ardennes
- Fishing pond on site; hiking and mountain biking trails from the site
- Playground, pétanque and restaurant; treetop courses in high season
If your idea of holiday heaven is hiking through the valleys, forests and rivers that make up the Belgian Ardennes, put your best foot forward with a stay at Camping Moulin de Bistain.
A five-minute drive from Cherain, Gouvy, this family-friendly place is handily set for numerous hiking and cycling trails. If you’re game for a bit of fishing, it'll be right up your street, too – there’s a pond stocked with trout on site and, as no licence is needed, anyone can have a go. The Eastern Ourthe river runs through the site with plenty more fish to catch, but you'll need a licence for that one. The riverbank is also the place to be for peaceful days and evenings spent by the water… as well as paddles in it.
The outdoor activities continue at base – there’s a playground for the kids, and the big kids can join the action with games of pétanque. During high season, those brave enough can also get to grips with treetop jumping courses and abseiling.
If you’re hungry just thinking about all the fresh air adventures, the restaurant at Camping Moulin de Bistain will be a welcome sight, and there’s an outdoor terrace where you can tuck in while admiring the pretty surrounds. Barbecues and campfires are also permitted here, so rustling up your own grilled eats is another option (trout, anyone?).

Local attractions
Don your walking shoes and set off directly from the site to get your explores underway. There are a bunch of hiking trails alongside the Ourthe river, in forests and through meadows, so following the river is a good start. It’s possible to rent mountain bikes in the area, too, so scenic cycles along dedicated routes are just as achievable.
For more pretty sights, head to the Waterfalls of Coo (40 minutes’ drive) – activities like ziplining and kayaking accompany the waterfall here. Nearby there’s also a small amusement park, Plopsa Coo, with kids’ rides and go-karts, as well as an animal park, Parc à Gibier, where a train takes you around the critters.
Closer to base, there’s a big indoor play centre, Mared Indoor (15 minutes), while at Ferme de la Planche (10 minutes), there are barefoot walking trails, donkey rides and other animals to see. There’s also a playground here and some nice spots to settle down for a picnic.
For a bit of history, make your way to Bastogne (25 minutes) for an insight into World War II’s Battle of the Bulge at the Bastogne War Museum, Mardasson Memorial and Bastogne Barracks.
Petrolheads, meanwhile, might like to visit Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps (45 minutes), the home of the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix.
