  • Friendly park a short walk from the centre of Charleville
  • 10-minute drive from stargazing evenings at Charleville Cosmos Centre
  • Outback-style meals and activities several times a week
Outback in vibes but town in location – sounds like a pretty bonzer combo eh? Snaffle a spot at Bailey Bar Caravan Park and you can have equally easy access to camp cookouts, country activities and urban amenities. No long rural drives to find your digs here, as the park is on the edge of Charleville, putting it just a short walk from the town’s cafés, restaurants and supermarket. In fact there’s no need for drives at all if you wish – you can be delivered here via the town’s train station. From this handy location it’s easy to get out into the outback for horse riding, wildlife spotting and gazing up into the stars of the famed dark skies, all safe in the knowledge that you can return to base for a warm welcome, a chance to chill out in the shaded gardens and a comfy night’s sleep. On certain nights of the week you can also come back to a fab alfresco meal in the form of a crackling spit roast or a two-course camp oven dinner (stew, dessert and billy tea), all served up round the communal campfire. Guest entertainers pop by from time to time, and there’s also a chance to place your bets on on a yabby race. When you’re not having dinner prepared for you, there’s a communal kitchen and barbecue area; if you make a mess you can clean up at the launderette and the well-equipped toilet block.

Local attractions

There’s a lot of open space around the town of Charleville, and a lot of ways to explore it. Start by dropping in to the town’s visitor centre for details of walks and tours you can take to see native plants and animals including birds, wallabies and bilbies. Or, if you like, you can head out into the wilds on horseback or take a scenic flight for some epic outback views. It’s not all about the surrounds, though – it’s worth spending time in the town itself too, to visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service visitor centre and Charleville Historic House Museum, take a walk along the banks of the Warrego river and perhaps play a round at the local golf club. The lack of light pollution also makes this an excellent place to look up into the night sky. The Charleville Cosmos Centre is open by day for space-themed activities or you can sign up for an evening visit to see the sky through one of their powerful telescopes.
