  • Peaceful campground on the Tumut River near Kosciuszko National Park
  • Tumut five minutes’ drive; Yarrangobilly Caves one hour and 10 minutes
  • Pool and playground; barbecue area with seating; convenience store
On the northern fringes of Kosciuszko National Park, a vast area of wilderness in New South Wales, Tumut Valley Holiday Park is a great option for families looking for a little R&R, while also drawing active types with a large range of nearby outdoor pursuits. Accessing the campground is easy: it’s right on the Snowy Mountains Highway, a five-minute drive from the town of Tumut. But once you go through the entrance, you’ll feel completely immersed in nature, with the forested peaks of the Wereboldera State Conservation Area (15 minutes’ drive) in the background and the windy Tumut River marking the eastern edge of the property. You might find the perfect place for a picnic along its banks – or maybe a sweet angling spot. Staff (trained in first aid) are available 24/7 to provide assistance and tips on what to do and where to go. If you intend to go trekking on the Snowy Mountains (three hours), they’ll also supply you with a complimentary Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) – because safety is paramount. (Speaking of which, there are also boom gates and CCTV at the entrance.) For a (slightly) less challenging trail, consider the forested Blowering Cliffs walking track (10 minutes), with views of Blowering Reservoir and waterfalls. You might also catch glimpses of resident wildlife, including kangaroos, emus and parrots. If you’d rather do very little, pull up a sun lounger poolside while the kids tire themselves out in the playground. The campground also comes with a coffee shop and a convenience store. There are outdoor barbecue areas with seating and cable TV, plus a laundry and two amenities blocks.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: The mountain and valley views, bathroom facilities and large grassy areas also really loved the cows in the paddock along with the water access just through the gate. The reception puppy was also an amazing bonus

Local attractions

Birdwatchers take their binoculars to the Tumut Wetlands (10 minutes’ drive), where they might spot nesting kingfishers in the lagoons, galahs and finches in the trees, plus birds of prey. There are more winged encounters (think parrots and cockatoos) to be had in the Wereboldera State Conservation Area. If you’re keen to learn more about the 19th-century Gold Rush in Australia, head to the Adelong Falls Gold Mill Ruins (25 minutes), a heritage industrial site where it’s possible to see the remains of an ore-crushing machine; or to Batlow (half an hour), where the Reedy Flat Creek is said to have yielded bucketfuls of gold. Among the Yarrangobilly Caves (one hour and 10 minutes) are the Jillabenan Cave, with its delicate stalactites, and the South Glory Cave, known for its vast limestone chambers. Bring a jacket (it gets chilly in the subterranean caverns), but bring a swimsuit, too, for after your underground exploration, you might want to take a dip in the thermal pool.
