  • Dog-friendly bush getaway in Kookabookra with a waterfall
  • In a gem fossicking area, 55 minutes’ drive from Glen Innes
  • Swimming and kayaking in water holes; other outdoor activities onsite
What’s on the itinerary at Kookabookra Falls? Gold fossicking, kayaking in swimming holes, bushcraft and hiking to see the waterfall are some of the activities at hand here. This dog-friendly bush getaway is in Dunooki, which has 2500 acres of pristine wilderness, and the campground is in part of the historical area of the Kookabookra township, which was once a gold mining town with a population of 5000 people… Nowadays, its spoils (and those of the famous gold rush town of Bear Hill, 10 minutes’ drive away) still lie underground, making this place prime fossicking grounds. So, bring your own pan and find your fortune… there are gold and gems to be found either on the campground or in some of the gorgeous designated gem fossicking areas in the local area. It’s not all about gem fossicking here though. There’s a lot of other adventures onsite from swimming or kayaking in waterholes to birdwatching and looking out for rare wildlife (the area is home to some unique and endangered species). Other activities include bushcraft and climbing, and with the waterfall and its lookout, it’s a splendid place to get into some hiking or photography too. There’s a lot of character about this campground and plenty of points of interest here or outside – Kookabookra Falls is 40 minutes’ drive away from Guyra and there are World Heritage Sites and national parks within around an hour’s drive of the campground too. Facilities here are on the simpler side and include a flushing toilet, running water and fire pits.

Local attractions

Where to get going to first? Glenn Innes (55 minutes’ drive), a World Heritage area where gem fossicking is gold (in the literal and figurative sense)? Glenn Innes has heaps of heritage-listed buildings, a Celtic monument called the Australian Standing Stones (55 minutes) and a visitor centre where maps of where to search for rare stones are available. Guyra (40 minutes) is a good bet for those outdoorsy types among you – the Mother of Ducks Lagoon (45 minutes) is a highlight here, especially for keen birdwatchers and anyone who’s a fan of a pretty picnic spot. Fishing for some more handsome views? Ebor Falls (an hour and five minutes) is a large waterfall and the surrounding area is well-known for its great trout fishing. Then, there are the national parks for more places that don’t hold back on the scenery side of things. You could go swimming or canoeing in Guy Fawkes River National Park (55 minutes) or climb to the boulders in the Cathedral Rock National Park (an hour and 15 minutes), perhaps.
