- Peaceful Oberon caravan park two-and-a-half hours’ drive from Sydney
- Jenolan Caves half an hour’s drive; the Blue Mountains around an hour
- Communal camp kitchen; restaurants and takeaways five minutes’ walk
With a location in-between several New South Wales conservation areas and nature reserves – including the famed Blue Mountains National Park – Jenolan Holiday Park at Oberon is also only two-and-a-half hours’ drive from Sydney, making it an easily accessible rural refuge from the big city.
Set on grassy parkland amid trees attracting spectacular birdlife, this peaceful site has modern amenities including a shower block with a disabled-specific bathroom, and laundry facilities with coin-operated washing machines and dryers so you can keep on top of chores.
Kids can run off energy at the playground by the holiday park entrance, while teens gather around the skateboard ramps at the adjoining recreation park. Any sporty families who need an extra fill of activity should nip round the corner to the Oberon Pool and Tennis Complex (bookings can be made at reception), open over the summer months and also offering barbecue and picnic facilities.
And when it comes to catering concerns, there’s a communal camp kitchen on site with barbecues, a microwave oven, fridge, gas cooktop and a dish-washing area – although of course you have the option of cafés and takeaways five minutes’ walk away in the centre of Oberon too.

Local attractions
Where to start? Perhaps with a day trip out on the hiking and biking trails through eucalyptus forests in the spectacular Blue Mountains National Park (around an hour’s drive). Here you can also clamber up to Cahill’s Lookout viewpoint for dramatic views over sandstone escarpments and take the Skyway cable car for bird’s-eye glimpses of Katoomba Falls and the Three Sisters rock pinnacles.
If you don’t want to stir so far from home base, in Kanangra-Boyd National Park (20 minutes) you can cycle the circular Boyd River Loop and take selfies with a backdrop of the sheer Kanangra Walls as they rise dramatically above Kanangra Creek. More spectacular formations are found in Evans Crown Nature Reserve (half an hour), where you can walk or cycle to a massive pile of granite boulders sacred to several Aboriginal peoples.
And the natural wonders just keep on coming – this time underground. Grab a pair of sturdy boots and take a guided walking tour of the breathtaking millennia-old stalactites and stalagmites in the subterranean complex at Jenolan Caves (half an hour).
