  • Lakeside caravan park near Lampeter in rural Carmarthenshire
  • A half-hour drive to Cardigan Bay beaches and dolphin-spotting trips
  • Tennis court on site; bars and shops five minutes’ drive away
Treat yourself to a stay at Ty Llyn caravan park, a six-acre, adults-only site for caravans and motorhomes, with gorgeous rural views and – best of all – a view of a sizeable lake, fed by spring water. On clear days, expect to see spectacular sunsets over the water – and if you want to get moving, the site has a tennis court where you can practise your swing. With a tiny number of adults-only grass pitches among six acres of gorgeous countryside, you’ll never feel overcrowded at this spot, and there’s plenty of wildlife to spot around too. Although well-behaved canines are welcome, they’ll need to be under control at all times, as there are farm animals grazing in surrounding fields. While there are no food offerings at Ty Llyn, team members are happy to advise on choice of restaurant or where to go shopping for supplies – top spot is Lampeter (five minutes’ drive), with handy shops and plenty of pubs, cafés and restaurants.

Unpowered grass and gravel tent site

Liked: Ground was flat and even though it was raining the ground stayed firm for the pegs to stay in. Lovely scenery with the lake, owners friendly and kind enough to get the tractor to help us get our car out of the mud as we were stuck. They also took the time to advise us of local shops and takeaways they recommend.

Disliked: Online states there is a shower available, toilet block and washing up area. This was not what we expected at all. The shower and washing up area were in an old style static caravan. The shower did not work, and there was no water for the sink to work at the washing up area for us to do the dishes. It did have electric so we boiled the kettle to wash our dishes. (The owners did eventually notify us of the shower and water not working and offered for us to use the shower and sink in the house, we declined as felt rude to use their house when the facilities should have been working as it was the first weekend they were open). There were 3 portaloo like toilets side by side, they hardly flushed and the toilet seats were very high up ( I am 5ft6 and I could not touch the floor when sat). There were sinks in with each toilet which had peddles on the floor to press for water to wash hands. 2 out of the 3 sinks did not work and one just shot black gunk out. The soap dispenser in the middle toilet was also broken. They could have also added hooks on the doors to hang coats/umbrellas. The toilets were also located outside the owners house (like their drive way). We went to the toilet at 8:45pm and felt we should not have gone as everything was pitch black, lucky we had torches to find our way. We were meant to stay 3 nights but due to poor facilities, we left a day early.

Unpowered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Idyllic. Lovely location, peaceful and relaxing. Hosts were wonderful, met us on arrival and introduced us to the site. Available if needed and happy to help but kept their distance to allow us to enjoy. Especially appreciated when new campers arrived who pitched up rather close and owners asked them politely to allow space without us having to ask. Meant we could relax in our own space.

Unpowered grass and gravel tent site

Liked: Convenient location, nice lake with option to use boat

Disliked: The toilet facilities are not up to standard. There is one combined toilet and shower for the whole site, located in a fixed caravan. The shower does not drain well, so ended up with water pooling around your feet. It did not look like the faciliites were cleaned frequently either.

Unpowered grass and gravel tent site

Liked: There wasn't much to dislike! Basic but beautiful location, really lovely & friendly owners, who couldn't do enough for you. Facilities really clean. 4G network signal. Fishing rights along the bank (although we didn't catch anything!) Pitch where you want. Loved the horses walking past to their stables both morning & evening. Beautiful sunsets. Absolutely coming back to stay.

Disliked: Really nothing to dislike.... although it would have been nice to have a lock on the bathroom door.

Unpowered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Great site with beautiful lake that made us extend our stay from 5 days to 3 weeks. The site had all of the facilities that we needed and a gorgeous host family who would go out of the way to help us have an enjoyable time. Our dogs were welcomed onto the site and enjoyed the freedom and swimming in the lake. Wouldn’t hesitate to return and would recommend it anyone. Thanks to Sheila and family for making it a great holiday.

Local attractions

There are all sorts of adventures to be had if you’re based at Ty Llyn, from trekking with alpacas at Woodlands Alpacas (25 minutes’ drive) to saddling up for horseback trail riding from Maesllan (10 minutes) and playing a round of golf in Lampeter (five minutes). And of course, there are miles of local footpaths for dog walks, as well as mountain-bike tracks in woodlands surrounding the site. Dolphin-spotting boat cruises depart from New Quay (half an hour), while the Cardigan Bay seaside resort of Aberaeron makes a fab day out on sunny days, with a beach backed by colourful Georgian-era cottages and some cute seafood restaurants. For a more cultural outing, jump on the steam train to Carmarthen (35 minutes) to pick up crafts in the covered market and nose around the art galleries. Tour the stately John Nash-designed villa at National Trust - Llanerchaeron (25 minutes) or potter around the biospheres and lovely landscapes at the National Botanic Garden of Wales (45 minutes). Closer to base, Norwood Gardens and Tea Room (10 minutes) has several themed gardens to wander, and looks wonderful in spring when the daffs are out.
