  • Glamping and camping site near peaceful Llanybydder, Carmarthenshire
  • A 25-minute drive to Brechfa Forest, and 35 minutes to Cardigan Bay
  • Posh loos, warm showers and charging points; shops five minutes’ drive
The folks at Rustic Huts in Llanybydder, Carmarthenshire have been making shepherd’s huts for customers since 2016, and opened their own glamping and camping site in August 2022. The site covers 10 acres in three fields, with a stream and ponds for kids and dogs to splash around in. Keep an eye open for frogs and dragonflies, and see if you can spot the resident red kites who nest in the old Scots pine tree near the house. A small woodland is ideal for building dens and collecting wood for campfires. The owners are happy for you to light campfires as long as you never leave the fire unattended – they believe everyone should have the chance to sit around a fire, gaze up at the stars and enjoy time away from technology with friends and family. Luckily there is little light pollution around the site, so anyone who enjoys star gazing will hopefully get lucky and have a couple of clear nights – but make sure you bring a decent torch as it gets very dark if the moon is not out. Guests have access to a posh flushing loo and warm shower in TyBach shepherd’s hut, and electric points in the changing area for hair dryers and mobile phones, plus mains water and dish-washing facilities. The village of Llanybydder (five minutes’ drive) has two shops for stocking up on essentials, as well as weekly livestock markets and a famous horse fair on the last Thursday of every month.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Beautiful quiet location. Tim provided an excellent service to us, giving us regular weather updates and regularly checking if we were ok. He even sent texts when we had heavy rain to check on the family and ask if we needed anything. Also gave excellent advice on where to go with our children in the daytime. Clean facilities and choice of pitch which made a huge difference as we were travelling with friends. We will definitely be visiting again!

Liked: The campsite was quiet and peaceful. The facilities were clean and tidy. Tim and Rhiannon, who run the site, were lovely and helpful. Tim suggested some places for day trips and arranged extra wood for our campfire when we needed it. The children in the group (aged 8 to 10) loved pond dipping at the central pond and spent loads of time playing in the stream at the bottom of the field. We were fortunate to have some lovely weather with only a few rainy days, and although the campsite can't control the weather, being able to sit and watch the sunset and then stargaze was a treat!

Disliked: As with all campsites, a pair of wellies is essential!!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Everything! A beautiful, peaceful site with wildlife in abundance. Kids loved exploring the ponds searching for dragonflies, paddling in the stream and eating blackberries that we had collected. Lots of space to run about and a pitch up. A fire pit was provided and the option of buying firewood or collecting our own was given, we did both. The sky at night was incredible and perfect for stargazing, never seen so many stars!!! Facilities were awesome, hot shower with changing room, flushing toilet stocked with plenty of loo roll and soap and perfectly clean. Phone and internet connection worked well onsite. There were also charging lockers for phones etc. A nice little washing up area with washing liquid and sponges, there was also a tin bath which we made use of to bathe the little one! Hosts Tim, Rhiannon, Bryn and Dion were fantastic and couldn't do enough, every request was fulfilled, ice pack freezing, kindling and use if a tin opener. They even provided toys for the kids and gave us ice for drinks on hot days. Just a short 5 minute drive to the local shops which stocked everything you may need, we also found a nice park for the kids to play. A perfect base to go exploring, we visited Lampeter, Carmarthen and Poppit beach in Cardigan which was a 55 minute drive and a lovely day out. A great site and would recommend, we will definitely be back next year. Also the Shepherds hut onsite is a little gem, a perfect place for hiding away from the world and relaxing, will be booking that for a cosy winter weekend.
