  • Luxury glamping with spectacular views of Brecon Beacons National Park
  • A five-minute drive to Castell Carreg Cennen; 10 minutes to Llandeilo
  • Safari tents with shower, woodburner, kitchenette and private hot tub
Byw’r freuddwyd… welcome to castle country. Set on a hillside smallholding in the Brecon Beacons National Park, Gelli Glamping is a perfect fit for anyone who loves outdoors adventures with a spot of history thrown in. With this as a base, you can explore ancient Carmarthenshire castles while taking in the spectacular scenery of the Tywi Valley. Gelli Glamping is also the perfect fit for anyone who likes a few of life’s luxuries on their glamping breaks. Approached by private access, each safari tent is kitted out with life’s little essentials – woodburner, kitchenette and hot indoor showers for starters. Outside there is sheltered decking with a firepit for barbecues (pick up supplies in Llandeilo, 10 minutes’ drive), and – best of all – a private hot tub angled so you can catch the sunset as you soak with a glass in hand. The site feels so remote and peaceful that it’s hard to remember it’s only 20 minutes by car from the handy M4 motorway. Site hosts Carys and Rhodri offer all guests a warm Welsh ‘croeso,’ and are happy to advise on the best attractions and restaurants to visit as well as walking and cycling trails.

Yr Odyn 2 bedroom safari tent (hot tub)

Liked: Everything. - Kitchen was very well equipped, had everything we needed (inc foil, washing up liquid etc) - Very new and well furnished - Everything was well thought out - had trays for 4 people to eat on as there wasn't enough space for another table - Premium feel - decor was well designed and consumables were good quality (branded soap, etc) - Very reliable hot water - Small gestures - bottle of white, marshmallows, welsh cakes on arrival, bluetooth speaker - Well prepared for keeping warm - quilt, electric radiator, hot water bottle for sleeping - Convenient self check-in (the hosts also came by to check everything went well)

Disliked: - Lighting adds to the atmosphere, but a bit dim - Lack of indoor table/kitchentop space - Entrance difficult to see in the dark (only a small sign)

Local attractions

When – and if – you can drag yourself away from the beauteous hilltop setting of Gelli Glamping, Castell Carreg Cennen (five minutes’ drive) sits precariously on its improbably steep hill, and you’ll most likely have it all to yourself. Dryslwyn Castle is another crag-top beauty, and you can also have a nose around Dinefwr Castle at National Trust-owned Dinefwr Park (both 15 minutes) – also known for its rare-breed White Park cattle. The neo-Gothic Gelli Aur Country Park (15 minutes) is the spot for nature paths in a woodland deer park, and you can watch birds of prey fly at the National Botanical Gardens (25 minutes). One of the jewels in the local crown is Aberglasney Gardens (15 minutes), with formal plantings, a tree tunnel and walks amid atmospheric ruins. There are plenty of walks direct from the glampsite, but if you want to up the exercise ante, get your Lycra on to explore the Brecon Beacons National Park on two wheels, or try out Brechfa mountain-biking challenges like the testing Raven Trail (half an hour). Prefer exploring on four legs? Dinefwr Riding Centre (10 minutes) has pony treks and riding lessons to suit all abilities.
