  • Small family farm surrounded by nature in West Wales
  • Two miles from the National Botanic Garden of Wales
  • Farm animals, small duck pond and wildlife area on site
Day at the beach or day in the Brecon Beacons? How about both? Cracking Carmarthenshire site Coedhirion Farm is in a mighty handy location between the two, allowing you to pick freely between coast and countryside (and also castles, theme parks and botanic gardens) on a West Wales whim. This family-friendly place is on a working farm just off the A48 (excellent news for those who fear manoeuvring their van along little lanes) and a leisurely 10-minute stroll from a couple of country pubs in Llanddarog (excellent news forā€¦ well, just about anyone). Thereā€™s also a post office down in the village; not such exciting news perhaps, until you learn that they serve a rather fine brekkie. Carmarthen is around a 10-minute drive away for restaurants, supermarkets and other shops. Peaceful times beckon here: woods and wildflowers are all around, and thereā€™s a dedicated wildlife area on site, with a small duck pond and nature trails for the nippers to follow. Youā€™re also welcome to pet and feed the farmā€™s Limousin cattle and Texel and Coloured Ryeland sheep (pick your animal snacks wisely though, and donā€™t forget to wash your hands afterwards). Kids chomping at the bit for a runaround? Thereā€™s plenty of space for ball games at the grassy play area. Amenities include water taps, electric hookups and a chemical disposal point, plus there's a well-maintained shower and toilet block thatā€™s won plaudits from previous guests (ā€˜cleaned so many times each day we lost countā€™ says one).

Power optional grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Great open space showers/ toilet suits and nice farm and wildlife location

Disliked: Arrived at site with no contact or knowledge of which pitch we were on, found a pitch which don't think was right but ah well it'll do, stayed 2 nights still no contact with any owners/ warden etc, roads were v wet bumpy loose gravel, like black tar

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We can only apologise. We always try to meet visitors on or soon after arrival. Due to recent bereavements we have not been at home as much. We are so sorry that we missed you. As regards the roadway we have had rain incessantly over the winter which has made repairing the road impossible.

Excellent site, with well stocked clean facilities and great staff.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Easily accessible location, great showers and really friendly owners. The site was clean and well maintained and lovely being so close to the farm animals

Disliked: Probably too much road noise off the A48 from the tent piches but you get used to it. Shame there was nowhere walkable selling local produce and a point to note, if you have dogs no local pubs allow them inside so we couldn't eat out.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Our local shop and post office is a seven minute walk and they do sell some local produce, locally produced meat, delicious fresh cakes and savouries baked in the village, and fresh fruit and veg. It may need better signage, I admit. The two local public houses have beer gardens with outside seating where dogs are welcome. Unfortunately the weather has not been kind and alfresco eating has been difficult.

Nice site, convenient, not cheap.

Summer Field unpowered grass site

Liked: Free showers, clean toilet block.

Disliked: We were in the summer field which was a bit slippery & muddy due to rain. By far most expensive campsite we stayed in - it was the bank holiday weekend but perhaps we could have found a cheaper option. Maybe we were panicked into booking something.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Obviously we are disappointed about it. We explained to all arrivals on Bank Holiday weekend that we had had two months of continuous rain and so the field was wet. However we pointed out the driest route to pitches. All our other visitors were perfectly happy. Indeed several stayed on for additional days. As for the cost of Ā£29, it hasnā€™t changed all summer and by the time you deduct VAT, cleaning costs for the Shower Block and toilets, electricity and gas for unlimited hot water when showering, use of our mini kitchen and laundry, the price seems reasonable for two people. We are very sorry that you didnā€™t enjoy your stay and have noted your comments.

Everything was great. Clean and tidy. Good facilities. The animals. Friendly welcome.ā€¦

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Basic site within easy reach of west wales allowing access to some glorious beaches

Disliked: Only 3 showers on whole site / unisex & request to remove shoes before entering block, not ideal as more akin to wet rooms so floors wet and no safety in terms of picking up potential foot infections

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. In addition to the three wet rooms we have an additional three toilets which has been sufficient for our visitor numbers this summer. We were forced to request removal of outdoor shoes/Wellington boots on entry to the Shower Block because of the horrendous wet weather during July and August. Some people brought indoor shoes/socks to wear in the SB however your point regarding foot infections applies equally to changing rooms at swimming pools. We are a very small business and try to provide the best facilities we can and try to upgrade each year. Thank you for staying with us.

Local attractions

For a bit of local history, take the 10-minute drive into Carmarthen, a riverside town thatā€™s got the remains of a Roman fort and amphitheatre, or to hilltop folly Paxtonā€™s Tower for some fab views. Youā€™re never too far from a castle in Wales of course, and thatā€™s true here ā€“ Dinefwr, Llansteffan and Kidwelly castles are all within a half-hour drive for those thatā€™d like to play at being knights. The siteā€™s also less than two miles from the National Botanic Garden of Wales, a gorgeous site covering several themed gardens, the worldā€™s largest single-span glasshouse and a tropical butterfly house. Kids after a bit more adrenaline? Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo is a half-hour drive away. For beach days, itā€™s a half-hour drive to several miles of sand around Pembrey; walks in the Brecon Beacons are about the same distance away.
