  • Woodland Glamorgan wild camping five minutes’ drive from Machen
  • Cwmcarn Trail Centre and Castell Coch both 25 minutes’ drive
  • Adults-only pop-up site with views of Flat Holm and Steep Holm
Fancy a spot of really wild camping among Glamorgan woodlands? Welcome to Ty Draw, an adults-only, dog-friendly spot high on a hillside above the village of Machen, where you and your pooch can really get away from everything and everyone. With just a handful of pitches (some sloping) tucked under trees, this really is the place for wild campers who are happy to rise to the challenge of having no facilities; there are no loos and no electricity, and the grass pitches are walk-in only, with access along a track mown into ferns. Wherever you get set up, there are stunning views all around – the islets of Flat Holm and Steep Holm in the Bristol Channel are both visible on clear days – but every day you’ll have 180-degree views across the valley to mountains beyond. The pitches are also just a few steps from Machen Forest hiking trails, and close to Cwmcarn Trail Centre (25 minutes’ drive) for mountain-biking aficionados. You’ll certainly feel nicely isolated when tucked up in your tent on site, but actually Ty Draw is less than five minutes’ drive from a convenience store in the village of Machen, so there’s no big drama if you’ve left something vital behind at home.
